Be it known that I, GEORGE MITCHELL, of Naco, in the county of Cochise and Territory of Arizona, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Cutters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in pipe-cutters, the object of the invention being to provide a pipe-cutter which will be cheap and simple in its construction and which will permit its cutters to be readily adjusted without stopping the operation of the device; and with these ends in view the invention consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter" explained, and pointed out in the claims. In the accompanying drawings,--Figure 1 is a View in side elevation of my improvement, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a modified form of threaded bar.
A represents a two-part ring the sections a a of which are connected at one end by a hinge-joint I), while their free ends are adjustably connected by the following means.

To the ring-section a is secured by welding, riveting, or otherwise a post or stud O,
the upper end of which is formed with an open slot d. The free end of bolt 13 is received within the slot d, and by means of the handnut D, applied to the screw-threaded end of the bolt, the two sections of the ring may be drawn together and retained in place.
The ring-sections are provided with screwthreaded holes F, in which are placed the screw-threaded bars G, each being provided at its outer end with a handle 9 or wheel g, as shown in Fig. 2, to facilitate the turning of the bar; The drawings illustrate three screwthreaded bars arranged equidistant around the ring; but it is evident that two, three, or more such bars may be employed.
H represents rotary steel cutters, mounted in bearings I, that are swiveled to the inner ends of the bars G.
The operation of the device is as follows: The ringsections are opened and placed around a pipe K that it is desired to cut, and then the ring-sections are closed and secured together by means of the bolt B. The screwthreaded bars are then turned by means of their handles and are so adjusted that when the ring is rotated each one of the cutters will engage the surface of the pipe. The operator then rotates the ring by grasping the handles g and at the same time slightly rotates each handle, and thereby successively feeds forward each cutter, with the result that the cutters are caused to act uniformly and progressively in cutting the pipe. Owing to the fact that the cutters are mounted directly upon the inner ends of the feed-bars the force required to feed the cutters is equally distributed on all sides of the screw-threaded feed-bars, and hence all uneven strain and wear of the screw-threads are obviated.
" The device is exceedingly simple and cheap in its construction, being composed of but few parts, and admits of ready operation, because it enables the operator to rotate the ring and at the same time gradually and independently feed forward the cutters, and owing to the fact that the resisting strain of the cutters is exerted in a line coincident with the longitudinal center of the screw-threaded feed-bars such strain is equally disposed on the entire circumference of the screw-threads and prevents them from being unduly or un evenly worn.
It is evident that instead of employing roller-cutters I may use other forms and constructions of swiveled cutters and that other slight details of construction may be varied without departing from my invention.
