SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 408,867, dated August 13, 1889. Application filed April 27, 1889. Serial No. 308,871. (No model.)
.To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN LLOYD VIL- LIAMs and THOMAS HENRY WILLIAMS, both of Shenandoah, Schuylkill county, State of 5 Pennsylvania, citizens of the United States,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coal or Rock Drills, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had tothe accom- Io panying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a side elevation of a drill containing our invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the operative parts on line I5 :c o: of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of said operative parts. Fig. 4 is a lateral crosssection on line e' e, Fig. l; and Fig. is aplan of the gear which is feathered to and operates to rotate the drill-spindle, shown in cross- 2o section, and the drill-tool carried thereby.
Our present invention relates to cert-ain improvements upon the coal or rock drill for.

2 5 and our invention consists in the several parts and devices of a drilling-machine and their combinations therein, hereinafter particularly described, and asmore particularly rccited in the claims.
3o A is the stock or supporting-bar of the drill, having at its free end the series of teeth shown, to be forced to and held against the side of a recess out in the bed of coal or rock, as shown, by means of a wedge A piv- 3 5 otally jointed to and carried by a brace-rod A2, the opposite end of said rod being detachably and adjustably seated in a slot in a lug A3, near the upper end of said bar, by
means of jam-nuts, as shown, working above and below said lug on a threaded portion of the rod. The drilloperating mechanism, supported by the bar and brace-rod, is thus mounted in position for drilling. These described devices constitute a part of the invention set forth in the Letters Patent hereinbefore referred to. K
XVe mount the drill-operating mechanism upon the supporting-bar by means of a screwbolt A4, which passes through a suitable aperture a in the upper end of the bar to an d into a threaded aperture or recess b in the frame B of said drill mechanism, so that the bar is thus united pivotally to the frame at this point; and we provide a bolt A5 set in lug-piece A3, which bolt reaches through an aperture in and pivotally unites said lug to the bar A, and which bolt is adapted in length to extend through a laterally-extending slot b in a lug b2 on said frame B. By means of these devices the drill-frame B iso given a lateral adjustment on'the supporting-bar, and the brace-rod is given a similar adjustment on said rod, while the parts are held rigidly and effectively in their adjusted positions by means of the screw-bolt AAt and a nut a', working to the face of the lug 192011 the threaded end of the bolt A5. The degree of adjustability of the frame B on the rod A by means of the described devices depends upon the length of the slot b in the lug b2 on 7o the frame, and when this slot is given considerable length it may be preferably curved somewhat for obvious reasons, as shown.
Ve find that by the means described the effective and useful adjustment of the drillframe on the supporting-bar for the purposes intended is secured, and a desirable adjustability of the rod A2 on said bar is obtained.
