A. T. ABBOTT.
y DUUR PLATE.
No. 299,189. Patented May'Z'?, 1884.
Wzlff ef s l l Ewa/i074 NTTE STATES ALFRED T. ABBOTT, OF NEV YORK, N. Y.
DOOR-PLATE.
SFECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 299,189, dated May 2'7, 1884.
Application filed February 12, 1983. (Model.) Y
'0 LZ/ whom, it' may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED T. ABBOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of N ew York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Door- Plates, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in door-plates for name or other advertising matter.
The object of my improvement is:
First. To provide a plate so constructed that the letters are interchangeable by detaching the end of the frame.
Secondly. They are protected from the weather and dust with a plate-glass shield on one or both sides when required. W`hen used as a transparent plate in place of door-panel, the light shines through` the colored center plate, showing the letters in bold relief. The background may be of any desired color, which may be shown by withdrawing the combined plate from the frame and holding the same to the iight.
Thirdly. The facilities for securing and detaching the end of frame.
Fourthly. By using ornamented sheet-metal letters in place of gold' or silver leaf, so liable to peel or scale.
I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l represents a front view of the combined door-plate, showing detachable end fastened in place. Fig. 2 is a vertical section, showing bolts withdrawn by turning back the l screw which passes through the door or iiX- ture, and also how it is attained by pressure on the hinge expanding the spring, thrusting the bolts out, or releasing the pressure by withthe rear of the frame the screw C, which at the 4 same time secures the detachable end piece of the frame in place, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, through nut D, pressing against the hinges F F, and forcing the bolts B B right and left into socket A and A at the miter-corners.
Fig. 2 represents a vertical section of the frame, with the bolts B B withdrawn by contraction of spring E, operated on by pressure of screw C, through nut D on the ends of hinges F F.
Fig. 3 shows a section of the frame A, with a sectional view of the center plate, H, over which is placed the plate-glass shield. G G, front and back.
Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isn
The combination, in a door-plate, of the frame A, having a name-plate adapted to be removed at the end of the frame, with a detachable end piece secured to the frame by bolts B B, by means of screw C, nut D, and hinges F F, the bolts being withdrawn by spring E, as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
ALFRED T. ABBOTT.
