Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J. W. RAMSAY AND DANIEL WILSON, OF GRAFTON, VIRGINIA.
PORTABLE INDIA-RUBBER BATI-IINGr-TUB.
Speccation of Letters Patent No. 29,914, dated September 4, 1860.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, J. W. RAMSAY and DANIEL WILSON, of Grafton, in the county of Taylor and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Bathing-Tubs; and we do hereby declare that the following' is a full, clear, and eXact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective of the tub co1nplete-and Fig. 2 a sectional view.
The nature of our invention consists in constructing an india rubber bathing tub with double sides and providing said tub with a screw valve-substantially for the purpose hereinafter mentioned.
It may be observed that we design our invention more especially for electrical bathing. As bathing tubs for this purpose have hitherto had many very objectionable features connected with them which this is designed entirely to obviate.
In order that others skilled in the art may make and use our invention, we will now describe its construction and operation.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
(A) represents the tub composed entirely of india rubber and which may be constructed in the usual form. The sides of said tub are double and rendered air tight.
(a) is a screw valve by which the sides may be inflated and the air confined, thus causing the tub to assume its proper shape after it has been compressed.
(o) is a stop cock for the escape of the water.
(d el) are two stays of thin metal placed near the top upon the outside of each side of the tub.
perfectly (7L L) are also two stays placed at the head and foot and on the inner side of the tub as fully represented in Fig. 1.
(g g) are ribs of metal connected to the stays (d d) and (it it) by means of thumb screws (e e). Said ribs should extend to the bottom of the tub. Thus it will be seen by constructing a bathing tub in this manner, the stay and ribs may be taken off and the tub folded up and put away or conveyed more easily from one place to-another.
The operation of bathing consists in filling the tub with water adjusting the patient, connecting the wires-first the negative pole with the water at the head, or near the head of the trough, and the positive pole with a sponge (attached for convenience) to be laid at the foot of the tub so that the feet of the patient may come in contact with it. The whole idea consists in having the negative pole first to connect with the water and the positive with the patient, and after this effect. has been sufliciently produced change the poles by connecting the positive pole with the water and the negative-.pole with the patient.
Having thus .fully described our invention what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is An india rubber bathing tub provided with double sides-in connection with the screw valve or its equivalent and arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth. f
J. IV. RAMSAY. DANIEL IVILSON.
