SINK RING Filed June 22, 1959 302951.; yz M 7;
VENTOR.
United States Patent 2,991,483 SINK RING Darrell Fred Thost, 609 S. Date Ave., Alhambra, Calif. Filed June 22, 1959, Set. N 0. 822,160 3 Claims. (Cl. 4-187) This invention relates to improvements in sink mountings for installing a standard flat flange-type sink in an opening in a drainboard and cabinet supporting said drainboard, and more particularly, to a new means to form a seal around the sink flange where the drainboard is composed of ceramic tile set in Portland cement mortar.
In the prior art, the seal around the sink flange was formed by elongated tile members of quarter-round crosssection and Portland cement grout between the top of the sink flange and the tile. Because of the temperature changes in the sink, due to hot and cold water, for example, the grout, having no resiliency, tended to crack and separate from the upper surface of the sink flange, subsequently presenting a constant leak problem.
In addition to the damage resulting from temperature changes, both soap alkali and fruit acids attacked the cement and caused leaks between the upper side of the sink flange and the lower surface of the quarter-round section of tile which formed the sink trim.
Therefore, it is an object of this invention to provide a new sealing means for sinks having ceramic tile drainboards.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a islink mounting in which a metal ring supports the sink ange.
It is a still further object of this invention to provide a sink mounting in which an elastomeric gasket forms a seal between the mounting ring and the top of the sink flange.
These and other objects of the invention will be apparent from a description of the preferred forms thereof which are shown by way of illustration in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
FIG. 1 is a top plan view of a sink installed on a wood cabinet frame, said sink having a ceramic tile drainboard;
FIG. 2 is a fragmentary view taken along the line 22 of FIG. 1 showing structure of the invention.
In FIGS. 1 and 2, there is illustrated a standard flat flange type sink '1 having tile drainboards 3 on both sides thereof, said tile and sink ring set in 'Portland cement mortar 5 on a wood cabinet top 4. The seal around the sink is formed by a continuous metal ring or mounting frame 12 and the sink flange 1 with an elastomeric gasket 6 therebetween.
In FIG. 2, mounting ring 12 is shown to be in the shape of an inverted L. The top flange 1A is horizontally and inwardly directed, and from the latter, a vertically downwardly directed web 24 extends. The bottom surfaces of web 24 terminates adjacent to top surface of wood cabinet frame 4 which supports both drainboard and the sink, the sink being in the aperture in the cabinet frame between the drainboards.
The seal between the top of sink flange of sink 1 and the bottom of flange 1A of the ring 12 is formed by a continuous elastomeric gasket 6 having a configuration corresponding to that of ring 12.
In the embodiment shown in FIG. 2 the flange 1A, gasket 6 and flange of sink 1 are held in close sealing contact by means of a block 32 with upper surface sloping downward towards sink and supported by bolt 30, said bolt passing through web 24, and a wedge shaped member 31 with lower surface parallel with said block and with a top surface on a plane with lower surface of flange of sink 1. Wedge 31 is provided with threaded hole 25 to engage said bolt, wedge 31 can be urged toward underside of said sink flange 1 by turning said Patented July 11, 1961 bolt, thus bringing upper surface of sink flange 1 gasket 6 and lower surface of horizontal web of ring 12, into close relationship to form a waterproof seal.
It is appreciated that while the mounting structure herein is specifically disclosed for use in securing a sink in a ceramic tile drainboard, it is capable of being used for mounting or securing any device of a similar character in an apertured drainboard and cabinet, or other top member, where installation conditions are similar; and that while specific reference is made to a sink in a ceramic tile drainboard, both of which are set in Portland cement mortar, other devices of an equivalent nature are intended to be included in the scope thereof.
My description and specific detail of presently preferred practices of the invention for the purpose of the disclosure and to illustrate the principles involved, will suggest to those skilled in the art, various changes, modifications and other departures from my disclosure that properly lie within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A sink ring mounting a flange type sink in a countertop having a ceramic tile drain board, comprising: a band of rigid material, said band having a cross-sectional configuration inthe shape of an inverted L, the horizontal web of said band extending inwardly over the flange of the sink, the vertical web of said band extending downwardly and terminating on the countertop, a block having an upper surface sloping downwardly toward said sink and positioned loosely on a bolt journaled through said vertical web, and a wedge-shaped member having a lower surface corresponding with said block, said wedge-shaped member being threadedly engaged with said bolt and bearing against the lower surface of said sink flange, holding the flange against the horizontal web with a watertight seal, there being at least one wedge and block assembly on the ring.
2.. Means for adjusting or leveling the sink and ring assembly defined in claim 1 comprising: an L-shaped lug having a vertical and horizontal web, said vertical web defining a hole proximate the top thereof with a bolt extending through said vertical web of said lug, said horizontal web of said lug extending outwardly away from said sink, said horizontal web of said lug defining a hole with a threadedly engaged screw therein, said screw terminating on the cabinet top.
3. A sink ring mounting a flange type sink in a countertop having a ceramic tile drain board, comprising: a band of rigid metal, said band having a cross-sectional configuration in the shape of an inverted L, the horizontal web of said band extending inwardly over the flange of the sink, the vertical web of said band extending downwardly and terminating on the countertop, a block having an upper surface sloping downwardly toward said sink and positioned loosely on a bolt journaled through said vertical web, and a wedge-shaped member having a lower surface corresponoding with said block, said wedge-shaped member being threadedly engaged with said bolt and bearing against the lower surface of said sink flange, holding the flange against the horizontal web with a water-tight seal, there being at least one wedge and block assembly on the ring.
