SINK MOUNTING Filed Oct. 20, 1949 INVENTOR. 40m) 1.. 8A?
ATTORNEY Patented Mar. 4, 1952 UNITED STATES"PATENT OFFICE SINK MOUNTING Lloyd L. Bair Flint, Mich.
Application October 20, 1949, Serial No. 122,545
Various mounting and fastening means are i known and have been employed in securing a sink in sealed relation to a drainboard or cupboard counter top in the modern type building where the sink is mounted as part of an integrated built-in cupboard, counter top or drainboard.
- Due to the confined working space and the on the job workmans problems, the various known mounting and fastening means for the sink have been found unsatisfactory due to the difficulty involved in installing them initially and then due to the difliculty of securing the fastening means in the confined space below the sink in the region of the cupboard.
With the foregoing in view, the primary object of the invention is to provide mounting and fastening means for installing a sink on a drainboard or counter top which are easily associable with the drainboard and the sink and which are easily fastened.
An object of the invention is to provide spaced extensions on the ribbed molding which extend below the bottom of the drainboard or cupboard top providing wedge receiving areas between the extensions and Wedge cooperating structure in the area of the extensions.
An object of the invention is to provide a crossfoot or feet on either side of the spaced extensions constituting structural area suitable for riding a wedge thereon. An object of the invention is to provide dual wedges having portions of different height adapted to ride on the extension cross-foot or cross-feet so that the relatively thick drainboard or cupboard top and the relatively thin sink flange are simultaneously contacted and secured by driving the wedges.
An object of theinvention is to provide a crossmember or spanning member coupling the wedge portions of different height together to secure the wedge portions on the cross-feet and to provide a face for driving the wedge portions.
' Another object of the invention is to provide a slot in the dual wedge members to receive the extensions thereinto allow the wedge portions of different height on eitherv side of the slot to enter into the area of the spaced extensions and cross-foot so that the wedge portions may ride on the cross-feet attached to the extensions.
Another object of the invention is to provide 14 Claims. (01. 4-187) means for mounting and securing the sink on the drainboard or cupboard counter without the use of screws, bolts or nails.
These and other objects of the invention will become apparent by reference to the following description of the inventive sink mounting and fastening means in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of the invention in conjunction with a drainboard or counter top and a sink.
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the invention taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1; a section being partly broken away to illustrate the detail of the molding rib and the securing wedges.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the invention taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the invention similar to Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is an exploded view of the inventive ribbed molding and a securing wedge.
Fig. 6 is a side elevational view showing a wedge driven in one direction in relation to the ribbed molding on the sink flange side of the ribbed molding.
Fig. 7 is a side elevational view showing a wedge driven in the opposite direction in relation to the ribbed molding on the sink flange side of the ribbed molding.
Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the inventive ribbed molding; and
Fig. 9 is a perspective view of an inventive securing Wedge.
Referring to the drawing wherein like numerals refer to like and corresponding parts throughout the several views, the inventive integrated sink. drainboard, mounting and securing means dis-' closed therein comprises a relatively thick drainboard or cupboard counter-top 20, a top 2| on the drainboard 20, a bottom 22 on the drainboard 20, a continuous internal peripheral edge 23 on the drainboard 20 describing and defining a sink receiving opening therein, a sink 24, a basin 25 on the sink 24, a continuous external relatively thin flange 26 on the sink 24 at the top of the basin 25 receivable within the sink receiving opening of the drainboard 20, a continuous external peripheral edge 21 on the sink flange 26 facing and spaced slightly away from the internal peripheral edge 23 on the drainboard 2|], a top 28 on the sink flange 26 disposed level with the top' 2| of the drainboard 20, a bottom 29 on the sink flange 26 disposed above the plane of bottom 22 of the drainboard 20, a ribbed molding 20, a continuous rib 3|. disposed between the 3 drainboard internal peripheral edge 23 and the sink flange external peripheral edge 21 closing the space therebetween and lying level with the top 2| of the drainboard 20 but not extending to the bottom 22 of the drainboard 20 and lying level with the top 28 of the sink flange 26 and extending below the bottom 29 of the sink flange 26 but not extending below said counter bottom, a head 32 on the molding rib 3| overlying both the drainboard top 2| and the sink flange top 28, downwardly extending long fiat spaced extensions 33 on the continuous rib 3| depending below the bottom 22 of the drainboard 20, side faces 34 on either side of the extensions 33, exposed wedge receiving ends 34 on the extensions 33 adjacent the spaces between the extensions 33, a cross-member 35 at the bottom end of the extensions 33 comprising a foot 36 on either side of the extensions 33 at right angles to the side faces 34 and extending co-extensively therewith, a slotted dual wedge 40 receivable into the longitudinal plane of the extensions 33 via the spaces between the extensions 33 and insertable into the area of the extensions 33 with the slot 4| of the dual wedge 40 receiving the extension 33 endwise therein, a high tapered portion 42 on the dual wedge 40, a top 43 on the high tapered portion 42 contacting the bottom 29 of the sink flange 26, a bottom 44 on the high portion 42 contacting the ribbed molding foot 36, a low tapered portion 45 on the dual wedge 40, a top 46 on the low tapered portion 45 contacting the bottom 22 of the drainboard 20, a bottom 41 on the low tapered portion contacting the ribbed molding foot 36, a spanning portion or block 48 between the high portion 42 and the low portion 45 rigidly connecting same, and a face 49 providing driving or hammering area on the dual wedge 40.
The ribbed molding 30 provides the two confining or reaction points or members against which the action of the dual wedges 40 is exerted with the top resistance being provided by the head 32 and the bottom resistance being provided by the cross-foot 35 with each being immovably mounted in relation to the other by being connected together by the rib 3| and the extensions 33 so that they cannot be forced apart by the action of the dual wedges 4D. The head 32 lies over the drainboard top 2| on one side and the sink flange top 28 on the other side while the wedging action of the dual wedge low portion 45 is exerted against the drainboard bottom 22 securing the ribbed molding 30 to the drainboard 20 and the wedging action of the dual wedge high portion 42 is exerted against the sink flange bottom 29 securing the sink 24 to the ribbed molding 30 and via the molding 30 to the drainboard 20.
In employing the inventive improvements in sink mounting and fastening means in conjunction with a drainboard or cupboard counter top, the applicator first constructs the drainboard or counter top 2|] with a sink receiving opening therein described or defined by the continuous internal peripheral edge 23; he then inserts the ribbed molding 20 which has been manufactured to conform to the configuration of the peripheral edge 23 in the opening next adjacent the internal peripheral edge 23 with the head 32 overlying the top 2| of the drainboard 20 and with the rib 3| next adjacent the drainboard edge 23; he then brings the sink 24 up from under the drainboard 20 into the sink receiving opening therein until the top 28 of the sink flange 26 lies next adjacent the head 32 of the ribbed molding 30 so that the head 32 overlies the sink flange 26 and the sink flange external peripheral edge 2! lies next adjacent the rib 3|; he then inserts a dual wedge 40 into the space between the ribbed molding extensions 33 with the high portion 42 of the wedge 40 on the sink flange 26 side of the rib 3| and the low portion 45 of the wedge 40 on the drainboard 20 side of the rib 3| and he then drives the wedge with a hammer securing the ribbed molding 30 to the drainboard 20 and the sink 24 to the ribbed molding 30 thereby supporting the sink 24 on the drainboard 20 via the ribbed molding 30 and the interlocking wedges 40.
The wedges 40 are preferably fabricated as right hand and left hand respectively so that their wedging action is exerted in opposite directions to prevent creeping and so that the driving of one wedge to tighten same acts to tighten its companion wedge previously driven in the opposite direction. Fig. 4 illustrates two preferred styles of associating the wedges 40 with the ribbed molding 30 with the smaller spaces able to receive a wedge 40 therein shown at the top of the figure, while larger spaces able to receive two wedges 40 are shown at the bottom of the figure.
The short cross-foot or cross-member 35 on the molding 30 allows the sink 24 to be brought up from under the drainboard 20 and pass the cross-foot 35 on the molding 30 as the ribbed molding 30, being unfastened, can tip or tilt slightly when the sink flange '26 is pushed past the cross-foot 35. After the sink is positioned, the ribbed molding 30 lies perfectly straight and level as no distorting influences are exerted on same. I
Due to the fact that the ribbed molding 30 is fastened to the drainboard 20 and the sink 24 at exactly the same time and at points exactly oppositely opposed, all stresses and distorting influences on the molding 3|] are counter balanced and neutralized leaving the molding 30 and especially the head 32 smooth and unrippled and in flat sealing relation to the drainboard 28 and the sink flange 26.
It can be seen from the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing that a sink 20 can easily and quickly be mounted and secured on a drainboard or cupboard counter top 20 without the use of nails, screws, or bolts and that the installation can be made with facility regardless of cramped working conditions.
Although but a single embodiment of the invention has been shown and described in detail, it is obvious that many changes may be made in the size, shape, detail and arrangement of the elements of the invention within the scope of the appended claims.
