Description

April 17, 1962 M. J. JUST SINK MOUNTING ARRANGEMENT Filed July 21, 1960 United States Patent 3,029,445 SINK MOUNTING ARRANGEMENT Matyas J. Just, Chicago, 11]., assignor to Just Manufacturing Company, a corporation of Illinois Filed July 21, 1960, Ser. No. 44,332 1 Claim. (Cl. 4-187) This invention relates to a sink and drainboard arrange ment. More particularly the invention relates to an improved clamping and attaching structure for connecting a sink to a drain-board.
A prime object of this invention is to provide an improved attaching structure for connecting a sink to a drainboard without the utilization of a separate attaching ring such as is used in conventional structures.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved attaching structure for connecting a sink within the opening of a drainboard, the said attaching structure being simple in design and effectively providing for secure attachment.
Still another object of the invention is to provide an improved attaching structure for attaching a sink within an opening of a drainboard the said attaching structure including clamping means which are horizontally adjustable to a plurality of positions to facilitate the attachrnent of the sink rim to the drainboard.
A still more specific object of the invention is to provide an improved attaching means for attaching a drainboard rim to a drainboard, the said structure including a plurality of L-shaped clamps each having an upright leg which engages the lip of a longitudinally extending channel and which includes a threaded fastener having a head engaged within the channel for permitting longitudinal adjustment, the said fastener upon tightening of the same, securely clamping the sink to the drainboard.
These and other objects will become more readily apparent from a reading of the description when examined in connection with the accompanying drawings.
FIGURE 1 is a plan view of an improved sink and drainboard;
FIGURE 2 is a bottom view of the sink and drainboard shown in FIGURE 1 including a plurality of clamping attachments;
FIGURE 3 is an enlarged cross-sectional view taken substantially along the line 3-3 of FIGURE 1; and
FIGURE 4 is an enlarged exploded view in perspective showing an improved attaching clamp and structure for attaching a sink within the opening of a drainboard.
Referring now to FIGURES l and 2 a sink arrangement is generally designated by the reference character 10. The sink arrangement comprises a drainboard 11 having a rectangular opening 12. The drainboard 11 consists of conventional construction including laminations 14, a plastic top 15 and a plastic bottom 16.
A sink or lavatory is designated at 17 and includes an upper surface 18, and as shown in FIGURE 2, a bottom surface 19. The sink 17 also includes a bowl 20 having sides 21 and a centrally located outlet 21'.
The sink 17 also includes a rim 22 extending completely around the periphery of the bowl 20, the said rim 22 also having an underneath rim surface 23. The outer end of the rim 22 is provided with a peripherally ex tending bead 24, which as shown in FIGURE 3, engages the drainboard 11 adjacent the opening 12 for securely positioning the sink within the said opening 12.
A mounting assembly is generally designated at 25 and comprises a plurality of brackets 26 which are disposed around the bowl 20 and on the underneath surfaces 19 and 23. Each bracket 26 is of channel-shaped construction including a top flat surface 27 which is secured by brazing, welding, etc. to the underneath surface 23 and to the surface 19. The bracket 26 further includes vertically spaced inwardly bent horizontal flanges 28 and 29. A downwardly projecting lip 30 is integral and coextensive with each flange 28. Each lipis positioned inwardly or recessed from the opposed lateral edges of the channel-shaped bracket to provide effective seating means throughout the length of each bracket. An L-shaped clamping element is designated at 31 and includes a long horizontal leg 32 and a short vertical leg 33. Each clamp ing element 31 is provided with a threaded opening 34 into which a threaded fastener 35 is threaded. The threaded fastener 35 is provided at its lower end with a screw driver slot 36 and is provided at its upper end with a flat head 37.
In assembly the sink is merely placed within the opening 12 and the beads 24 engage the drainboard around the said opening as indicated in FIGURE 3. Since the opposite ends of the brackets 26 are open it is a simpler matter to merely insert the heads 37 of the threaded fasteners 35, with the L-shaped clamping elements in position, and the clamping elements may then be longitudinally adjusted along the brackets 26 as indicated. Upon tightening of the fasteners 35 the short legs 33 tightly engage the seating means provided by the lips 30 and the horizontal legs 32 tightly engage the underneath surface of the drainboard 11 as indicated, whereupon the head 24 will be tightly drawn down upon the drain board thus positively sealing the sink around its edges and effectively securing the same in position and in place.
Thus it is obvious that the objects of the invention have been fully achieved and an improved sink construction is disclosed. It must be realized that changes and modifications may be made in the construction without departing from the spirit of the invention as disclosed or the scope thereof as defined in the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
In a sink structure including a drainboard having an upper surface and having an opening, a sink positioned within said opening, said sink including a bowl and a horizontal rim extending around said bowl, said rim having an edge portion engaging the upper surface of said drainboard; a clamping structure for securing said sink to said drainboard comprising a plurality of elongated channel shaped brackets, each bracket including a top flat hori zontal surface and a pair of vertically spaced inwardly extending horizontal flanges having edges spaced laterally apart to provide on each bracket a horizontal elongated slot, said horizontal slots facing downwardly and extend ing substantially parallel to said rim edge, said top surface of each bracket being connected to the underneath surface of said rim, projecting downwardly and being substantially coextensive therewith, a downwardly extending lip on one of said flanges disposed nearer to said bowl, said lip being substantially coextensive with said bracket and being disposed horizontally inwardly from laterally opposite edges of said bracket to provide an elongated recessed horizontal seating portion on each bracket, and a plurality of securing clamps supported on said brackets, each securing clamp including an L-shaped member having a horizontal leg and a vertical leg, said horizontal leg having a Patented Apr. 17, 1962v 3 4 vertical threaded opening, a vertical threaded fastener for References Cited in the file of this patent each L-shaped member disposed in each opening, said UNITED STATES PATENTS threaded fastener having a tool engaging lower end, said threaded fastener extending into said slots, and including a 2 23 fiat head at its upper end slidingly engaged Within said 5 2:932:O36 Harris i 1960 bracket, whereupon tightening of said fastener, said horizontal leg engages a portion of the drainboard and said OTHER REFERENCES vertical leg engages said seating portion and is supported Elkay from Domestic Engineering for May 1958; on said lip and said sink is secured to said drainboard.
