Description

April 17, 1962 M. J. JUST SINK MOUNTING ARRANGEMENT Filed Feb. 20, 1961 United States Patent Ofilice 3,029,446 Patented Apr. 17, 1962 3,029,446 SINK MOUNTING ARRANGEMENT Matyas J. Just, Chicago, 111., assignor to Just Manufacturing Company, a corporation of Illinois Filed Feb. 20, 1961, Ser. No. 90,439 2 Claims. (Cl. 4-187) This invention relates to a sink mounting arrangement.
More specifically the invention relates to an improved clamping device for attaching a sink structure to a drainboard.
A prime object of this invention is to provide animproved mounting and clamp arrangement for permitting quick attachment of the flange of a sink in sealing relation with respect to the top surface of a drain board.
Still another object is to provide an improved clamping arrangement for clamping a sink within the opening of a drainboard, the said clamping arrangement providing means whereby a plurality of circumferentially spaced clamps may be easily and quickly adjusted about the periphery, of the sink in circumferentially spaced relation so that a sink rim is securely attached in sealing relation to the top of a drainboard in which the sink is positioned.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an improved clamping device including a plurality of clamps which permit a sink installer to install a sink within the opening of a drainboard by merely attaching a C-shaped clamp to a plurality of circumferentially spaced studs and securing them in position by means of a wing nut whereby the sink can be installed with a minimum of time and effort.
A more specific object of the invention is to provide an improved mounting structure for attaching a sink within the opening of a drainboard, the said structure including a plurality of circumferentially spaced threaded studs secured to a supporting angle secured to the underneath side of a rim of the sink, the said studs being adapted to support a C-shaped clamping element which may be quickly attached and tightened in position for securing the said sink in position.
These and other objects of the invention will become more readily apparent from a reading of the description when examined in connection with the accompanying sheet of drawing.
In the drawing:
FIGURE 1 is a plan view of an improved sink construction installed in a drainboard;
FIGURE 2 is a bottom view of the sink installation shown in FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 3 is a cross-sectional view taken along the line 3--3 of FIGURE 3; and
FIGURE 4 is a perspective view in exploded form of a clamping assembly showing the parts in position of their assembly.
Referring now particularly to FIGURES 1 and 2 a sink is generally designated by the reference character 10. The sink is of a circular shape and includes an outwardly projecting horizontal rim 11 having an upper fiat surface 12 and a lower fiat surface 13. The sink includes a bowl 14 having at its lower end a drain opening 15.
The sink 10 is installed within a drainboard 15 usually constructed of a suitable plywood and having upper and lower fiat surfaces 17 and 18 usually constructed of a suitable plastic type covering. The drain board also comprises an opening designated at 19.
As best shown in FIGURES 1, 2 and 3 an annular clamping angle is designated at 20 and includes a horizontal leg 21 and a vertical leg 22. A plurality of vertically extending studs 23 are circumferentially spaced and each includes an upper flat portion 24 having opposed flat sides 24, one of which is connected to the leg 22 by means of Welding indicated at 25. The angle 20 also may be suitably welded or brazed to the lower surface 13 of the rim 11.
Each stud is also provided with a lower threaded portion 26. A C-shaped clamp generally designated at 27 is supported on each stud 23. Each C-shaped clamp comprises a vertical portion 28 having a lower horizontal portion 29 provided with an upwardly extending resilient flange 30. Each clamp 27 also includes an upper short horizontal portion 31 having its free end or edge (which,
terminates inwardly of the vertical leg 22) in parallel engagement with the inner fiat side 24' of the stud 23. The lower horizontal portion 29 also includes a vertically extending opening 32 and a wing nut 33 is threaded onto the threaded portion 26 of the stud 23.
In assembly the drainboard 16 is provided with the opening 19. The sink 10 has the angle 20 secured thereto and the studs 23 in turn are secured to the leg 22 in circumferentially spaced relation. After the sink is suitably centered within the opening 19 it is a simple matter for the installer to insert the clamp 27 so that the stud 23 projects through the opening 32 and whereupon the wing nut 33 is then tightened as shown in FIGURE 3 against the lower surface of the horizontal portion 29. The horizontal portion 31 has its free end or edge in engagement with the inner flat side 24' and as the wing nut 23 is tightened the clamp 27 is moved upwardly and the horizontal portion 31 slides on the inner flat side 24- whereupon further tightening of the resilient flange 30 grips the lower surface 18 of the drainboard 16 and the rim 11 is firmly set into engagement with the upper edge 17 of the drain board 16, the free edge of the leg 31 is supported so that the clamp 27 is supported against rocking or turning movement during tightening of the nut 33.
Since the short portion 31 is in engagement with the flat surface 24 there is no chance for the clamp 27 to become cocked or to twist and thus the full effect of the tightening of the wing nut 33 causes the firm clamping action which is provided by the edge of the rim 11 and the resilient flange 30.
Twisting or cocking of the clamp 27 is thus clearly prevented and a rigid clamping action is secured. Furthermore, the installer need merely handle two parts namely the clamp 27 and the wing nut 33 for each position of the studs 23. Thus it is believed that an eifective and simplified arrangement has been provided.
The objects of the invention have thus been fully achieved and an improved clamping arrangement has been disclosed which does not depart from the spirit of the invention nor from the scope thereof as defined in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
