(Cl. 126-191) This invention relates to an oven door, and, more particularly, to an oven door that is readily detachable horn the oven enclosure.
It is a general object of this invention to provide an oven equipped with a door pivotally attached thereto and in which the door may be detached from the oven enclosure for cleaning, replacement, etc. Another object is to provide, in an oven having an access opening in one of the vertical walls thereof, a door for closing the opening and in which the door is pivotally connected to the oven enclosure adjacent the bottom of the opening, themeans for securing the door to the enclosure permitting detachment of the door from the enclosure. Still another object is to provide a novel hinge means for connecting an oven door, or the like, to an oven enclosure where the weight of the door is utilized for maintaining the door in a pivotally-connected relation with the housing but which permits ready detachment of the door from the housing through a slight shift in the door position. Yet another object is to provide a hinged door for an oven, or the like, in which the door is pivotally connected to the oven housing for movement through a 90 are from closed to open positions and in which means are provided for immobilizing the door in the open position for ready detachment of the door from the oven. Other objects and advantages of this invention can be seen as this specification proceeds.
The invention will be explained in conjunction with an illustrative embodiment in the accompanying drawing, in which- FIG. 1 is a fragmentary elevational view, partially broken away, of a door-equipped oven incorporating teachings of this invention;
FIG. 2 is a fragmentary perspective view of an oven equipped with a hinged door and showing a portion of the oven and door in the area of the hinge;
FIG. 3 is a view similar to FIG. 2 but with the hinge mechanism thereof shown in a different operative position;

In the illustration given, and with particular reference to FIG. 2, the numeral 10 designates an oven enclosure, which usually is of rectangular shape. The oven is also seen in FIGS. 1 and 3, and is seen to have an access opening 11 in one of the vertical side walls thereof. Such construction is more or less conventional, and it is believed that further exposition of the construction details is unnecessary. Theaccess opening 11 is closed by a door generally designated 12 and which includes a frame 13 suitably covered by a front or outer panel 14 and a rear or inner panel 15. The rear or inner panel 15 is seen in fragmentary form in FIGS. 2 and 3 and is seen to be equipped with a cut-out portion 16 for the receipt of a viewing window.
Alsoyas seen in FIGS. 1-3, the door is equipped with a guide arm 17 of more or less conventional design, which United States Patent is curved to facilitate smoothness of the opening and closing of the door 12. As can be best seen in FIG. 5, the guide arm 17 is equipped with a laterally-extending bracket 18 having bolt-holes 19 therein for securing the bracket and thus the guide arm 17 to the frame 13 of the door, and interiorly of the front and rear panels 14 and 1 5, respectively.
As can be best seen from a comparison of FIGS. 46, the guide arm 17 is equipped with an offset upright portion 20 which is connected to the guide arm 19 by means of bracket 18. The upstanding portion 20 is equipped at the top thereof with a laterally-extending integral flange 21. The flange 21 is equipped with a bolt opening 22 for the receipt of a bolt 23 attached to one end of a coiled spring 24. The bolt 23 is equipped with a wing-nut 25, as can be readily seen in FIGS. 4 6.
Adjacent the lower portion of the upstanding portion 20, an integral U-shaped extension 26 is provided. The extension 26 is equipped with an opening 27 for the receipt of a pivot pin 28. The upstanding portion 20 is equipped with an opening 29 aligned with opening 27 so that the pivot pin 28 can be suitably mounted in the two openings and supported against lateral movement in the two openings 27 and 29. A bolt 30 is provided for the pivot pin 28. In essence, the elements 20 and 26, with the openings 27 and 29, provide a support for the pivot .pin 28 and the lower portion of the upstanding portion 20 providing this function is designated generally by the numeral 31' for the purpose of easy reference hereinafter.
Mounted within the support 31, which, it should be appreciated, is firmly and rigidly connected to the frame 13 by virtue of the attachment of bracket 18, is a hinge 32. The hinge '32 is approximately C-shaped and at one end is equipped with an opening 33 which pivotally receives pivot pin 28. The hinge 32 is also equipped with a laterally-extending post 34 about which is mounted one end of the link 35. The other end of link 35 is connected to spring 24.
.The hinge 32 is equipped with a laterally-extending flange portion 36 at the end thereof opposite the end equipped with opening 33. As can be best seen in FIG. 2, the flange portion 36 is received against a plate 37 provided on the oven enclosure 10. Ordinarily, two such plates 37 are provided, only one being shown in the accompanying drawing. The plate 37 is equipped with outwardly-extending flanges 38 and '39 at the bottom and top thereof, respectively ('best seen in FIG. 6). The top flange 39 is curved downwardly as well as forwardly, and provides thereby a channel for the receipt of the extreme top portion of flange 36.
With the door in the open position seen in FIG. 2 and the flange 36 engaged with the flange 39, it will be appreciated that'the weight of the door presses the flange 36 into bearing engagement with the plate 37 and the flange 39 of the plate37 restrains the flange 36 and hence the entire door 12 from moving outwardly and downwardly. When the door 12 is in the condition seen in FIG. 2, the spring 24- is extended and tends to restore the door to a position in which the flange 36 is parallel with the door surface. This can also be appreciated from a consideration of FIG. 4, in which an intermediate position of the door 12 is indicated by way of showing the guide arm and its associated integral structure in broken line.
As can be seen in FIG. 4, the hinge 32 abuts the support 31 when the door is in the closed position, so that a positive stop for the action of spring 24 is provided. Spring 24 can be arranged so that its equilibrium condition, i.e., the position of least tension, occurs at about the position of the door when it is closed. At any other position of the door, the spring 24 is under tension and tends to return the door to a closed position. However, the spring can be so selected that when the door is fully opened, the weight of the door effectively counterbalances the tendency of the spring to return to untensed condition so that the door will remain open.
The mechanism for disengaging the door 12 from the housing will now be described. For that purpose, the support 31 is apertured as at 40 and 41 (designated only in FIG. 6) for the slidable receipt of a latching-pin 42. The latching-pin 42 is seen to be equipped at the end thereof opposite that adapted to be received within the aligned openings 40 and 41 with an upstanding lug portion 43 and an ear 44. The lug portion 43 is received within a slot 45 (designated only in FIGS. 2 and 3), with the ear 44 being on the inner or rear face of the panel 15. When the car 44 is moved from the position seen in FIG. 2 to that seen in FIG. 3, the pin 42 extends across the U-shaped support 31 and is carried by opening 41 as well as opening 40. The pin 42 can only be so moved when the door 12 is open, or nearly open. The minimal open position of the door 12 is seen in FIG. 7 in broken line, where it will be noted that the dotted line position of pin 42 is such as just to clear the hinge 32. A corresponding position of the member carrying guide arm 17 is indicate-d in FIG. 4. When the pin 42 is moved to latching position, the action of the spring 24 is effectively blocked and the door is immobilized relative to hinge 32. In this condition, the door 12 can be lifted to disengage flange 36 from under flange 39 and remove the door from the housing-this position being seen in FIG. 3.
The plate 37 is also equipped with an outwardly-extending flange 46 along a side edge thereof which limits lateral movement of the hinge 32 when it is inserted into the hinge-supporting bracket made up of plate 37 and the top and bottom flanges 39 and 38, respectively. A corresponding side flange can be provided on the hingesupporting bracket provided on the side of the oven not seen.
In the operation of the device, whenever the door 12 is desired to be removed, it is only necessary to pivot the door to the fully-open position-that seen in FIG. 2.'
Thereafter, the housewife merely moves the cars 44 outwardly and along the slots 45. By a slight pressure under the door, as would be ordinarily applied to close the door, the door can be made to pivot through the small are indicated by the solid and dotted line positions of door 12 in FIG. 7. After this has been done, the spring action in tending to return the door to closed position is effectively opposed by the latch pin 42 which bears against hinge 32. However, the spring action keeps the hinge 32 tightly pressed against the pin 42 so that the two elements-the door 12 and the hinge 32are effectively immobilized relative to each other. Thereafter, the door can be grasped by the side and pivoted upwardly, which necessarily results in the flange 36 being pivoted out of bearing engagement with plate 37. A slight depression of the door in this condition disengages flange 36 from its receipt under flange 39, whereupon the door is completely detached from the oven.
The steps just described in connection with the detachment of the door 12 from the oven 10 are represented by arrows in FIG. 3, with numerals appended thereto. The numeral 1 in FIG. 3 indicates the outward movement of the car 44; the numeral 2 and the arrow'shown adjacent thereto indicate the slight upward movement of the door 12, while the arrow and the numeral 3 indicate depression of the door to complete the disengagement of the hinge 32 from the hinge-supporting bracket made up from plate 37. In the illustration given, the top flange 39 terminates a spaced distance from flange 46 to permit the receipt of hinge 32.
While in the foregonig specification a detailed description of an embodiment of the invention has been given for the purpose of explanation, it will be understood by those skilled in the art that many variations in the details herein given may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.

In an oven having a front vertical wall, an oven access opening in said front vertical wall, a door panel adapted to close said oven access opening, said oven, in the front wall thereof, being additionally equipped with a guide arm aperture, an elongated arcuate guide arm rigidly connected to said panel and removably inserted in said guide arm aperture, a hinge pivotally connected at one end thereof to said panel adjacent the bottom thereof, said hinge being equipped at the other end thereof with a flat flange adapted to have a flat surface thereof abut said vertical wall, said vertical wall being equipped with a bracket aligned with said flange and in supporting relation therewith, said bracket having upper and lower integral flanges extending outwardly of said wall, said upper flange being equipped with a downwardly-extending lip portion effective to confine the hinge flange, spring means interconnected between said panel and said hinge for pivoting said panel on said hinge, said spring means being operative to urge said panel into closing relation with said opening, and means on said panel engageable with said hinge for opposing the action of said spring means tending to pivot said panel on said hinge, whereby said spring means is adapted to urge said hinge into immobile relation with said panel when said engageable means is engaged with said hinge.
2. In an access opening-equipped oven, a door panel removably mounted on said oven and adapted to close the oven access opening, an elongated arcuate guide arm rigidly mounted on said door panel, aperture means in said oven for removably receiving said guide arm, a hinge pivotally connected to said panel adjacent the bottom thereof and equipped with an integral flange, bracket means on said oven equipped with a depending flange receiving channel along the top edge thereof adapted to releasably receive said hinge flange to support said panel, spring means interconnecting said hinge and panel, said spring means being connected to said hinge a spaced distance from the pivotal connection of said hinge to said panel, whereby said spring urges said panel in a pivotal movement about said hinge when said hinge is immobilized, and means on said panel for maintaining said hinge in immovable relation therewith, whereby said hinge flange can be disengaged from said bracket means by pivotal upward movement of said panel.
3. An o'ven, comprising a vertically-extending sideequipped casing having an access opening in said vertically-extending side, a flange-equipped bracket secured to said side adjacent the bottom of said opening, a door for said opening equipped with a hinge adjacent the bottom thereof, said hinge cooperating with said bracket to support said door, said hinge being pivotally connected to said door adjacent the door bottom for pivotal movement of said door about said hinge when said hinge is immobilized relative to said bracket, spring means interconnected between said hinge and door for urging said door to a closed position by pivoting the same about said hinge, means on the door opposing the urging of said spring means and thereby immobilizing the hinge relative to said door, elongated guide arm means rigidly connected to said door, and aperture means in said oven adapted to removably receive said guide arm means.
4. In a door-equipped oven, an oven casing equipped with a vertical wall, an access opening in said wall, a bracket on each side of said opening adjacent the bottom thereof, each bracket comprising a plate having outwardly-extending flanges on the top and bottom edges thereof, said top flange extending downwardly to form a channel with said plate, a rear face-equipped door for said opening having a hinge pivotally secured thereto adjacent the bottom thereof for each bracket and in alignment therewith, each of said hinges having a. laterally-extending flange insertable under said top flange and into bearing engagement with said plate, means on said door for immobilizing said hinge relative to said door, means for immobilizing said hinge flange against sideward movement when said hinge flange is inserted in said bracket, guide arm means rigidly mounted on said door, and aperture means in said casing removably receiving said guide arm means.
5. In a door-equipped oven, an oven casing equipped with a vertical wall, an access opening in said Wall, a bracket on each side of said opening adjacent the bottom thereof, each bracket comprising a plate having outwardly-extending flanges on the top and bottom edges thereof, said top flange extending downwardly to form a channel with said plate, a rear face-equipped door for said opening having a hinge pivotally secured thereto adjacent the bottom thereof for each bracket and in alignment therewith, each of said hinges having a laterally extending flange insertable under said top flange and into bearing engagement with said plate, means on said door for immobilizing said hinge relative to said door, means for immobilizing said hinge flange against sideward movement when said hinge flange is inserted in said bracket, guide arm means rigidly mounted on said door, and aperture means in said casing removably receiving said guide arm means, said means for immobilizing said hinge flange against sideward movement including an outwardly-extending flange on the side edge of eadh bracket.

In a door-equipped oven, an oven casing equipped with a vertical wall, an access opening in said wall, a bracket on each side of said opening adjacent the bottom thereof, each bracket comprising a plate having out- Wardly-extending flanges on the top and bottom edges thereof, said top flange extending downwardly to form a channel with said plate, a rear face-equipped door for said opening having a hinge pivotally secured thereto adjacent the bottom thereof for each bracket and in align ment therewith, each of said hinges having a laterallyextending flange insertable under said top flange and into bearing engagement with said plate, means on said door for immobilizing said hinge relative to said door, means for immobilizing said hinge flange against sideward movement when said hinge flange is inserted in said bracket, guide arm means rigidly mounted on said door, and aperture means in said casing removably receiving said guide arm means, said door being equipped with a hinge support for each hinge and pivotally carrying the same, spring means interconnecting said hinges and door for urging the hinge flange into parallel relation with the rear face of said door, and latch means on each of said supports for immobilizing the hinge flange in a position at an angle to said rear face.

In a door-equipped oven, an oven casing equipped with a vertical wall, an access opening in said wall, a bracket on each side of said opening adjacent the bottom thereof, each bracket comprising a plate having outwardlyextending flanges on the top and bottom edges thereof, said top flange extending downwardly to form a channel with said plate, an inside face equipped door for said opening having a hinge pivotally secured thereto adjacent the bottom thereof for each bracket and in alignment therewith, each of said hinges having a laterally-extending flange insertable under said top flange and into bearing engagement with said plate, the weight of said door being efiective to urge said laterally-extending flange against said plate, a spring interconnecting each hinge in said door operative to urge the hinge flange into generally parallel relation with the inside face of said door, said door, in the inside face thereof, being equipped with a slot for each hinge and carrying a latch member therein, said latch member being positionable in said slot to engage said hinge to oppose the urging of said spring.

In a door-equipped oven, an oven casing equipped with a vertical wall, an access opening in said wall, a bracket on each side of said opening adjacent the bottom thereof, each bracket comprising a plate having outwardly-extending flanges on the top and bottom edges thereof, said top flange extending downwardly to form a channel with said plate, an inside face-equipped door for said opening having a hinge pivotally secured thereto adj acent the bottom thereof for each bracket and in alignment therewith, each of said hinges having a laterally-extending flange insertable under said top flange and into bearing engagement with said plate, the weight of said door being effective to urge said laterally-extending flange against said plate, a spring interconnecting each hinge in said door operative to urge the hinge flange into generally parallel relation with the inside face of said door, said door, in the inside face thereof, being equipped with a slot for each hinge and carrying a latch member therein, said latch member being positionable in said slot to engage said hinge to oppose the urging of said spring, said door being equipped with a U-shaped, arm-equipped fitting for each hinge, each fitting pivotally supporting a hinge between the arms thereof, each of said arms being apertured for the slidable receipt of said latch member, said latch member comprising a pin slidably mounted in the apertures of said arms.

In a door-equipped oven, an oven casing equipped with a vertical wall, an access opening in said wall, a bracket on each side of said opening adjacent the bot-tom thereof, each bracket comprising a plate having outwardly-extending flanges on the top and bottom edges thereof, said top flange extending downwardly to form a channel with said plate, an inside face-equipped door for said opening having a hinge pivotally secured thereto adjacent the bottom thereof for each bracket and in alignment therewith, each of said hinges having a laterally-extending flange insertable under said top flange and into bearing engagement with said plate, the weight of said door being efiiective to urge said laterally-extending flange against said plate, a spring interconnecting each hinge in said door operative to urge the hinge flange into generally parallel relation with the inside face of said door, said door, in the inside face thereof, being equipped with a slot for each hinge and carrying a latch member therein, said latch member being positionable in said slot to engage said hinge to oppose the urging of said spring, each hinge comprising a C-shaped member pivotally connected to said door at one end thereof and equipped with said laterallyextending flange at the other end thereof, said spring being connected to said hinge intermediate the ends thereof, 7
