3,046,974 Patented July 31, 1962 This invention relates to a door stop mechanism intended more particularly for use in connection with bottom hinged cooking oven doors. Oven door stop mechanism, as heretofore ordinarily constructed, permitted the doors to be swung down only to horizontal position when access was to be had into the oven interiors.
The chief aim of my invention is to provide a simple inexpensive and reliable stop mechanism by which cooking oven doors can be stopped not only in horizontal open position for access into the oven chamber to introduce and remove the food in preparation for and after baking or cooking, but also in slightly open position as desired or considered advantageous in diiferent uses of the oven, as well as in a position of vertical suspension completely out of the way, to render the oven chambers accessible for greater convenience in cleaning them.
Other objects and attendant advantages will appear from the following detailed description of the attached drawings, wherein:
FIG. 1 is a view, partly in side elevation and partly in vertical section, of a cooking oven with door stop means embodying my invention;
FIG. 2 is a broken out View in horizontal section taken as indicated by the angled arrows IIII in FIG. 1;
FIGS. 3 and 4 are detail views in section taken as indicated respectively by the angled arrows III-III and IV-IV in FIG. 1, and
FIGS. 5, 6 and 7 are views similar to FIG. 1 respectively showing how the door is stopped in a slightly open position, open in horizontal position, and in a position of vertical suspension.
A cooking oven herein illustrated and comprehensively designated by the numeral 10 is quadrangular designated in configuration and adapted to be set into a kitchen wall at a suitable elevation from the floor, its frontal door 11 being swingable outwardly and downwardly about a hinge 12 along the bottom of the door opening.
Preferably, but not necessarily, a stop mechanism of my invention generally designated 15 is utilized at each side of the oven, and the lower portion of the corresponding side wall of the oven is recessed as at 16 to provide a clearance space for accommodation of the mechanism.
As shown, the mechanism 15 comprises an inwardly reaching latch bar 17 which is pivotally connected at 18 to a lug 19 extending rearwardly from the door 11 immediately adjacent a side edge thereof well above the hinge 12. The distal end of the latch bar 17 is rounded downwardly on a liberal curve as at 17a and somewhat forward of its distal end, is formed with a hook notch 17b at the bottom. A helical tension spring 20 is connected at one end to a fixed anchorage 21 at the back of the oven casing 10, and to the other end is attached a block 22 in which a small pulley 23 is journalled. Connected at one end to the distal end of the latch bar 17 is a flexible cord or cable 25 which is retroverted about the pulley 23 and has its other end aflixed to the horizontal leg otfan angular bracket piece 26 secured to the outer face of the recessed lower portion of the corresponding side Wall of the casing at the bottom corner of the recess. As a consequence of the construction thus far, the door 11 is yieldingly held normally in the closed position of FIG. 1. A roller 30 at the top of the upright leg of the piece 26 is adapted to cooperate with the latch bar 17 as and for a purpose presently explained. Screwed fast to the outer face of the side wall within the recess 16 in the upper frontal corner of the latter, is a forwardly extending spring finger 31 provided at its free end with a roller 32 which is adapted to cooperate with the latch bar 17 and with a cam hump 19a on the lug 19 at the back of the door 11 in a manner also presently explained.
Operation When the oven is to be used for baking for example, the door 11 may be swung to the slightly open position of FIG. 5 incident to which the roller 32 of the spring finger 31 overrides the cam hump 19a of the lug 19 and is brought behind it to bear downwardly on the latch bar 17. As a consequence, the latch bar 17 is constrained to prevent the door from being closed by the pull of the spring 20. When access to the oven chamber is required to insert food in preparation for cooking, or to Withdraw it after cooking, the door 11 can be swung down to the horizontal position of FIG. 6 in which position it is stopped and positively held by engagement of the hook 171; of the latch bar 17 with the stop 30 as in- FIG. 6, the spring finger 31 keeping the roller 32 pressed down upon the latch bar 17 to prevent accidental disengagement of the hook of said bar from said stop roller. Before the door 11 can be swung down to the position of vertical suspension in which it is shown in FIG. 7, the latch bar 17 must be first lifted by hand in opposition to the downward pressure of the spring biased roller 32 to the broken line position of FIG. 6 and then pulled forwardly slightly to clear the hook 171) from the stop roller 30, whereafter the door can be depressed in opposition to the pull of the retracting spring 20. With the door lowered to the out of the way position of vertical suspension in FIG. 7 to provide fuller access to the oven chamber for cleaning, it will be noted that the pivotal connection 18 of the latch bar 17 with the lug 19 on the door 11 is well below the line or plane XX extending through the center of the hinge center and the center of the pulley 23. As a consequence, the spring 20 is impotent to cause the door 11 to be swung back toward closed position. As the door 11 is lifted in closing it subsequently, the hook projection 17b on the latch bar overrides the stop roller 30, and the cam projection 19a of the lug 19 on the door upwardly displaces the spring biased roller 32 to permit the door to be returned to the normal closed position of FIG. 1 by the pull of the spring 20.
While in accordance with the provisions of the statutes, 1 have illustrated and described the best forms of embodiment of my invention now known to me, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that changes may be made in the forms of the apparatus described Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claims, and that in some cases certain features of my invention may be used to advantage without a corresponding use of other features.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. The combination with an oven or the like having an access opening in the upper part of its front, a door for said opening, and a hinge connecting the door to the bottom edge of said opening, of door mechanism comprising a catch element located at one side of the oven somewhat above the level of the oven floor; a rearwardly extending latch bar pivotally connected at one end to the back of the door adjacent one side edge thereof at a distance from the door hinge and adapted to override the catch element, said bar having at an intermediate point in its bottom edge a hook projection to cooperate with said stop element in holding the door horizontally in open position and also a hook projection at its latch bar for yieldingly resisting opening of the door and wherein the catch element is in the form of a stationajrily supported roller.
3. A door stop mechanism characterized as in claim 1, wherein the parts of the stop mechanism are all accommodated in an inward recess formed in the corresponding side wall of the oven when the door is closed.
4. A door stop mechanism characterized as in claim 1, wherein the means which yieldingly resists opening of the door comprises a helical tension spring connected at one end to a fixed anchorage at the rear of the oven;
4 a pulley at the other end of the spring; and a cord or cable connected at one end to the distal end of the latch bar, said cord or cable being retroverted about the pulley and having its other end connected to a fixed anchorage adjacent the bottom of the oven at the front.
5. A door stop mechanism characterized as in claim 1;:
wherein the latch bar is pivoted to the lug at the back of the door, said lug having an upward cam projection and further including a spring finger by which the' latch bar is yieldingly depressed and which, by cooperation with the cam projectionon the aforesaid lug servesto' hold the door yieldingly in slightly open position.
