2,988,909 DOOR LOCK Charles C. Moler, Hartford City, Ind., assignor to Overhead Door Corporation, Hartford City, Ind., a corporation of Indiana Filed Mar. 2, 1959, Ser. No. 796,349 12 Claims. (Cl. 70-146) This invention relates to a lock assembly for upwardly 4acting doors, particularly desirable for use in connection with doors which are slidably associated with tracks.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide a door and lock assembly in which the latch automatically engages when the door is moved to closed position and is provided with means for locking from the inside of the door against manipulation from the outside of the door, and one which is provided with a key-controlled lock actuating means operable from the outer side of the door.
Second, to provide a lock structure having these advantages which may be assembled with a door without substantial modifications in the structure thereof.
Third, to provide a lock structure with latch release means operable from the outer side of the door provided with a detent for holding the latch in disengaged position with tripping means therefor acting when the door is moved from closed position so that the latch will be operative when the door is returned to closed position.
Objects relating to details and economies of the invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is dened in the claims.
A structure which embodies the features of the invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
FIG. 1 is a fragmentary front elevation view of a door and door frame or wall illustrating an application of the invention.
FIG. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view on a line corresponding to line 2-2 of FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary view mainly in vertical section `on a line corresponding to line 3-3 of FIG. 1.
FIG. 4 is a fragmentary view partially in section on a line corresponding to line lA-l of FIG. 2 with the manually manipulatable latch lock member shown in open position by full lines and in locking position by dotted lines.
FIG. 5 is an inside perspective view of the base plate or support memberwith the housing removed.
FIG. 6 is a fragmentary view partially in horizontal section of an adaptation of the invention to a door having metal panels and also illustrating the latch in engaged position by full .lines and in released position by dotted lines, the housing member being partially broken away.
In the accompanying drawing 1 represents a door frame provided with a jamb 2. The door 3 is of the upwardly acting sectional type comprising a plurality of hingedly connected sections. The hinges are not illustrated as they form no part of thisinvention. The door sections are provided with track engaging rollers 4, tracks 5 of the channel type being provided. These tracks are mounted onbrackets or supports 6.
The Ilock comprises a base plate or support member 7, preferably a-sheet metal stamping consisting of a web portion 8 provided with holes-9 adapted to receive attaching screws. This base plate is mounted on one of the door sections adjacent one vertical edge thereof and is provided with an outer inwardly or rearwardly projecting arm 10 -at one end thereof and having. a slot 11 therein. The base plate is provided vwith an inner ange 12 having a horizontal slot 13 therein. The base plate or support member7ha's apivot e`a`r'14 struck from the web Vthereof and to which the downwardly projecting pivot 15 is secured to pivotally support the latch 16 which is provided with a pivot engaging ear or lug "17. The coiled spring 18 is arranged on the pivot with one armv 19 thereof yengaging the latch supporting ear 14 and the other arm 19 engaging the latch.
The latch is provided with a keeper engaging member 20 projecting through the slot 11 in the arm 10 of the baseV plate 7 and with a nger piece 21 at its opposite end projecting through the slot 13 in the flange 12- thereof. The track is provided with a keeper 22 with which the latch engages when the door is in its fully closed posi-l tion. The latch may be disengaged by pressure on the' ingerpiece 21 or by means of the spring biased lockablepush button 23 which is arranged in a cylinder 24,' desirably fixedly secured to the base plate as indicated at 25,`
FIG. 3. The door has a bore 26 therein to receive this cylinder. The details of this lockable push button are not illustrated Ias they form no part of the present inven- A key is shown at 2S and may be manipulated to engage the push button bolt 29 with either the keeper opening 30 or the keeper opening 31'. The keeper opening 30 is positioned to receive the bolt of the push button when' being positioned at the inner side of the tripping end of the latch 16, see FIGS. 3, 4 and 5.
With this arrangement the latch can be operated from the inner side of the door by means of the iingerpiece 21.Y When the push button is locked in its inner position there manipulation e is sufficient clearance to permit the releasing of the latch from the inner side of the door.
To prevent release of the latch from the outer side of the door by manipulation of the push button when it is unlocked I provide a latch locking member 34 which is pivoted on the stud 35 projecting from the base plate and is provided with an inwardly projecting iingerpiece 36.
At its inner end the latch lock member 34 is provided With a stud 37 which engages behind the latch as illus- `trated in FIGS. 4 and 5, preventing any manipulation of the latch, either from the inside or outside of the door,
until the latch locking member 34 is moved to latch disengaging position a shown by full lines in FIG. 4.'
The lock is also preferably provided with a springable detent 38 mounted on the base plate below the lever 32 and in engagement therewith as shown in FIG. 3 so that when the lever 32 is actuated by the push button to release the latch, the lever is held in latch releasing position. This is of advantage in the event the operator releases the latch through the push button and does not hold the push button in latch releasing position until the latch by opening movement of the door is moved out-of keeper engaging positon.
closed position the trip member 39 is provided, positioned above the keeper to engage the latch as shown in FIG. 3`
and thereby disengage 'the lever 32 Vfrom the detent 38. The latch is provided with a housing 40 which encloses all the parts with the exception of the keeper engaging portion of the latch, the iingerpiece thereof and tion, The push button is outwardly biased by the spring To insure that the latch shall be in keeper engaging position on the return of the door to 43 of arcuate form disposed above the push button to protect the projecting end thereof.
FIG. 6 illustrates an adaptation of the invention to a door having metal panels 44. The structure is the same as described with the exception that the base plate 45 is provided with a rib or embossment 46 toA compensate for the rib 47 on the door. Only one of the fasteners 48 is illustrated.
With this arrangement of parts the door may be securely locked in closed position and may be locked from either the inner side or the outer side, but when locked from the inner side it is necessary to unlock it from the inner side. It locked from the outer side it maybe unlocked `from the outer side.
While I have illustrated the invention as. embodied in an upwardly acting door `for which it isfparticularly desirable, it is desirable for use in other closures of the sliding` type.
Having thus described the invention, what-is claimed asnew and is desired to be secured by Letters Patent'is.:
