TIFFIN, OHIO.
TACK-HAMMER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 298,650, dated May 13, 1884.
Application filed April 3, 1884.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, GEO. S. YINGLING, ALBERT L. FLAcKfand HENRY T. HELLER, citizens of the United States, residing at Tiflin, in the county of Seneca and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in TaclcHammers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
Our invention relates to improvements in tack-hammers, and has for its object to provide a cheap and durable article of general use and utility. The greater part of the hammer is cast in one piece. The handle proper is made in two pieces and secured together, the end being open, and adapted to be closed by a cork or its equivalent. The handle, being constructed as shown, forms a receptacle The advantage of this device is very apparent, for when it is desired to use the hammer for driving tacks they are always at hand, or handy! N 0 separate receptacle is needed for the tacks, and they are always where wanted-that is, where the hammer is.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective of the hammer, and Fig. 2 a side View with the handle in section.
A represents the head of the hammer, which may be of any approved shape, and having the usual striking-face and tack-drawing claw.
13 represents the shank of the hammer, and G a portion of the handle. The head, shank, and this portion of the handle are all cast in one piece. The rear of the portion of the ban dle is continued at right angles to the body of the same, and thereby forms the ring a, which is recessed on its inner side, as shown, the said recess extending about half-way around the inside circumference of the said ring. The portion 0 is open 011 one side, which opening is closed by the piece D, which forms about one-half or less of the handle of the, hammer. One end of D fits in the recess in the ring a,
(No model.)
which holds the said end in position. The other end is provided with a lug, m, which fits in a recess in O, and thus keeps the piece D from slipping.
6 represent a rivet or its equivalent, which passes through the piece D near the lug m, and also through the piece 0. This rivet, in 0011- nection with the recessed ring a and lug :12, holds the parts rigidly and securely in place. The opening through the ring a, and so into the handle, is closed by means of a stopper, F, preferably of cork. The handle being of two pieces enables the said handle to be cast of a uniform thickness, and also much thinner the recessed ring on the end of the said handle all cast in one piece, the other portion being cast separately and secured thereto by the ring at one end and a rivet at the other, the handle being open-ended and. internally concave, and adapted to receive and retain tacks, and to be closed by a suitable stopper, as set forth.
In testimony whereof we affiX our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE S. YINGLIN G. ALBERT L. FLAOK. HENRY T. HELLER.
