Description

'J. W. THOMPSON.
CARPET STRETGHER.
Patented May 13, 1884.
llllll munmmmnmmminm 11mm Amm IINITE STATES JOSEPH W. THOMPSON, OF PITTSBOROUGH, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO WILLIAM H. MILAN.
CARPET-STRETCHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 298,519, dated May 13, 1884.
Application filed February 27, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, J OSEPH W. THOMPSON, of Pittsborough, county of Hendricks, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpet-Stretchers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the to same.
My invention consists of a novel construction and arrangement of parts in hinged or folding carpet-stretchers, which will be fully understood by the following description and I5 claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of one arm and cross-head of my carpet-stretcher. Fig. 2 is the top view of the same. Fig. 3 is the same folded upon itself.
Figs. 4 and 5 show the-main form of my stretchers with two cross-heads provided with bars in the usual way, Fig. 5 being a plan view of the middle portion of Fig. 4, which is aside view.
My carpet-stretcher is made with crossheads A and B, Fig. 4, provided with barbs O and braces D. 'The extension-bars E and F have two hinges, G and H, so as to be folded up, as seen in Fig. 3, and thus shorten the 3 stretcher to work in a small room; or one of these bars may be folded and the other extended, so as to fit a medium-sized room. The middle fold or section, I, of one of the extension-bars is slotted and provided with a slide,
K, and the middle section of the other arm has a tongue, 0, fitting into the slot of its fellow, as seen in Fig. 2, while the two parts are provided with holes for the bolt L, and thus made adjustable in relation to each other,
in order to make the stretcher longer or shorter 0 at pleasure. In small rooms I use the form of stretchers shown in Fig.1, the cross-head B having no barbs to take hold of the carpet.
In this case one edge of the carpet is tacked, and then the cross-head B is placed against 5 the wash-board on the side of the room where the carpet is tack ed, and the barbed cross-head at the other end takes hold of the carpet to stretch the same. The bolt L is used to connect the two arms, and the slide K looks these arms after the extension is made.
I do not broadly claim a hinged or folding carpet-stretcher; but
WVhat I do claim is 1. The above described carpetstretcher, having the two cross-heads A and B, in combination with the two arms connected therewith, each of said arms having two hinges, so as to be capable of folding up into three folds, as seen in Fig. 3, and one of said arms having its terminal section or fold slotted, as seen at I, Figs. 2 and 5, to receive the tongue 0 of the middle fold of the other extension, sub stantially as set forth.
2. In combination with the'extension-arm with hinges G H, the tongue 0, the cross-head B, bolt L, and slide K, (shown in Figs. 1, 3, and 4 of the drawings,) substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
JOSEPH W. THOMPSON.
Witnesses:
JOHN T. BRUMFIELD, J. M. WILLs.
It is hereby certified that in Letters Patent No. 298,519, granted May 13, 1884, upon the application of Joseph W. Thompson, of Pittsborough, Indiana, for an improvement in Garpet-Stretchers, the name of the assignee of one-half interest therein was written and printed William H. Milan, that said name shonld have been written and printed William H. Miiam and that the proper correction has been made in the files and records of the case in the Patent Ofiice, and should be read in the Letters Patent to make the same conform thereto.
Signed, countersigned, and sealed this 20th day of May, A. D. 1884.
[SEAL] M. L. J OSLYN, 7 Acting Secretary of the Interior. Oountersigned BENJ. BUTTERWORTH,
