ATENT FFICE.
JOHN J. TEMPLE, OF KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN.
ICE-CREEPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 298,518, dated May 13, 1884.
Application filed February 2,1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: v
Be'it known that 1, JOHN J. TEMPLE, a citizen of Holland, residing at Kalamazoo, county of Kalamazoo, State of Michigan, have in- I vented new and useful Improvements in Ice- In the drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective View of the device connected with the heel of a boot; Figs. 2, 3, and '4, details in enlarged perspective;
and Fig. 5 is a top View with part removed.
The body D has a recess, a, in which is located a spring, 1'. These parts are shown in a former application made by me, Serial No. 117 ,212, except that the body in said application was made in two parts, with a clampingarm, a, at each of its four corners, and one of the parts of the body had a tongue, It, connected with it and adapted to play in the recess a over spring 1-. In the present device the tongue R is made separate from any part of the body D, and terminates at one end in a clan1ping-arm,f. The tongue R is located in channel S, and is covered by a plate, P, as in my former device referred to. The spurs 3o 0 0 are all located 011 the body D on the lower side thereof, as in Fig. 1. A lug, a, is formed on the under side of one end of the tongue, Fig. 3, against which one end of the spring rests. The other end of the spring rests against 5 the end wall of the recess a. In this device the upper ends of the arms a a project inward, and are formed flat, with a serrated surface, a. Such a construction efiectually clamps the footwear, and does not injure the same by seriously marring it. In the operation the two arms are caught over the edge of the sole, and the tongue is drawn out and the other arm caught over the other edge. A threaded hole is made through the arm f, in which is located athreaded thumb-screw, t. The thumb portion of the screw consists of two spurs; or other style of spur may be connected with the thumb-screw. By this means the device may be used by a rider, and the thumb-screw assist in holding the device on the boot.
Having thus dcscribed my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure is 1. In an ice-creeper, the combination, with i the recessed body, made in one piece, and provided at one end with clamping-arms. of the spring'actuated tongue portion, provided at the outer end with a clamping-arm, and the covering-plate, all substantially as set forth.
2. In an ice-creeper, the body and tongue provided with clamping-arms having the serrated extensions on the inner face of the upper ends, substantially as specified and shown.
In testimony of the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JoHn J. TEMPLE.
