IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR STRETCHING THE TOES 0F BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 215,959, dated May 27, 1879; application filed March 27, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM NAGLE, of Brooklyn, E. D., in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Device for Stretching the Toes of Boots and Shoes, of which the following is a specification.
I Figure 1 is a side view of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a side view of the rear part of the same, enlarged. Fig. 3 is a top view of the rear part of the .same. Fig. 4 is a detail top and sectional view of the forward part of the same. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the detached button.

The object of this invention is to furnish an improved device for stretching the toes of boots and shoes, which shall be so constructed that they may be applied to various sizes of boots and shoes, and which shall be simple in construction and convenient and effective in use.
The invention consists of two plates or bars adapted to be adjustably secured together, one of the said bars being provided at its rear end with a curved plate to rest against the inner surface of the counter of the boot or shoe, and the other with an upright arm on its forward end, having an inclined screwthreaded hole for the passage of the screwrod, which is provided with a swiveled block on its forward end, as hereinafter more fully described.
A represents a bar. having a curved plate, a, formed upon its rear end, to rest against the inner surface of the heel of the boot or shoe. The outer or convex surface of the plate a may be corrugated to prevent it from slipping; but this is not essential.
The lower side of the bar A-has teeth formed upon it to engage with similar teeth in the upper side of the bar B. Upon the forward end of the bar B is formed an upright arm, I), the upper end of which is enlarged, and has an inplined screw -hole formed through it. The bar A is slotted longitudinally to receive the clamping-screw (l, which screws into a screw-hole in the lower bar, B, so that by loosening the screw 0 the two bars A B may be extended or contracted to adjust the device to be used in larger or smaller shoes or boots, and by tightening the said screw 0 the two bars A B will be securely clamped together. D is a long screw, which is screwed into the inclined screw-hole in the upper end of the arm I), and has a cross-head handle formed upon or attached to its rear end for convenience in operating it.
To the forward end of the screw D is swiveled a block, E, of such a size as to press out and stretch the leather at the toe of the shoe or boot, and which has its forward side rounded off, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, so that it will not cut or injure the leather when pressed against it. 1n the forward and upper sides of the swiveled block E are formed holes to receive the pin of a button, F, which may thus be placed upon its upper side, as shown in Fig. 1, or upon its forward side, as shown in Fig. 4,, when desired.
The screw D should be of such a length that its rear end may project at the heel of the boot or shoe when the swiveled block E has been pushed forward to the toe of the said shoe.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination of the slotted bar A, having a curved plate upon its rear end and teeth upon its lower side, the bar B, having teeth upon its upper side, and an upright arm provided with an inclined screw-hole in its upper end formed upon its forward end, and the clamping-screw O, with the long screw D, having a block, E, swiveled to its forward end, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The swiveled block E and the button F, in combination with the screw D, and with parts A B of a shoe-toe-stretching device, substantially as herein shown and described.
