ICE-CREEPER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 407,448, dated July 23, 1889. Application filed April 11, 1889. Serial No. 806,856. (No model.)

- in the county of Lincoln and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Attachment for Boots or Shoes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in attachments for boots or shoes; and it consists in certain novel features, hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of my improved device, showing it applied to a boot; and Figs. 2 and 3 are plan views showing different positions of the device. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view.

My improved device comprises the heel-' plate A and the sole-plates B B, of proper shape to conform to the outline of the bottom of a boot, and provided on their under sides with the spurs or teeth 0. The said plates are further provided at their edges with the upwardly-projecting lugs D, which are adapted to engage the edges of the sole and the heel when the device is applied to a boot. The front ends of the sole-plates B B are pivoted together, as shown at E, so that the said plates can be spread apart or drawn together, so as to be fitted to a wider or narrower shoe. The rear ends of these sole-plates are connected by the links F F, which are pivoted together at their inner ends and have their outer ends pivoted tothe rear ends of said plates.

The inner ends of the links F F are pivoted together by means of a post or stud depending from a bearing-block G, and in the said bearing-block and the lug D, at the front edge of the heel-plate, I mount a right and left hand screw H, which is provided at its center with an angular portion I, adapted to be engaged by a wrench.

In practice my device is placed against the sole and heel of the boot, and the right and left hand screw is then rotated, so as to clamp the plates to the boot. As the said screw is rotated the block Gwill be drawn toward the lug D, and the heeLplate and the sole-plates consequently drawn together, so as to be firmly secured to the boot. At the same time that the block G is drawn toward the heel, and the lug at the front end of the sole-plates thereby clamped against the toe of the boot, the links F F will swing toward each other, so as to draw the sole plates together, and consequently clamp the lugs at the side edges thereof against the sides of the sole of the boot. The device will thus be securely clamped on the boot, so that it cannot be accidentally disengaged therefrom.

My device is intended more especially for the use of lumbermen when starting logs on their journey toward the saw-mill, but is equally as well adapted for use in other places and on all slippery surfaces.

The device is very simple, and will effectually prevent the user falling while at work. They can be quickly applied to the boot, and when not in use can be as easily detached therefrom and laid aside, and the advantages of the device are thought to be obvious.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s

1. The combination of the heel-plate, the

sole-plates pivoted together at their front" ends, the links connecting the rear ends of the sole-plates, and the screw extending between the heel-plate and the said links, as set forth.

2. The combination of the heel-plate having a lug at its front edge, the sole-plates pivoted together at their front ends, the links having their outer ends pivoted to the rear ends of the sole-plates, the bearing-block G,

having a depending stud forming a pivot for s the inner ends of said links, and the screw having its ends mounted in said bearingblock and the lug D, as set forth.
