Description
UNITED `STATES PATENT OFFICE..
JOSEPH M. COX, OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA.
DRAWERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 298,181, dated May 6, 1884.
Application led September 19, 1883. (No model.)
T all whom it may con/cern.- p
Be it known that I, JOSEPH M. COX, of
Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drawers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to drawers, the object being yto provide a pair of drawersA with strengthening or re-enforcing pieces of improved form, whereby the usual central seam will be avoided and great strength imparted to the front portion of the crotch as well as to the joined parts of the seat.
The invention consists in providing each section of the drawers with a semi-,elliptical lap and withl a front or crotch lap, as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
, In the drawings, Figure l represents a perspective view of a pair of drawers embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same, and Fig. 8 illustrates the blanks or sections from which the drawers are made.
A represents the body of each section, pro vided at its upper rear edge with a semi-elliptical lap, B, and at its forward edge with a lap, C. rIhe ends c of this lap C are inclined or biased, to insurea perfect fitting of the parts when joined. The two sections formed as thus described are joined as illustrated in Figs. l and 2, the parts B B overlapping to form a double thickness for the seat, while the forward portions C C overlap to strengthen the crotch. Y
An important advantage of my front re-en forcing laps is found in the fact that the same, 4o when the sections are' joined, lie in such'position as to have their weft at an angle to the weft of the body of the fabric, thus effectually preventing the tearing of the garment at the point most liable to give way. The upper ends of the laps C C join the front facing, D, of the garment and form continuations of the same, to impart a finished appearance to the drawers. The gradual curvature or semi-el liptical form of the seat-laps affords a very narrow double thickness-or reenforcement of the crotch, thus allowing of the usual yielding of the garment at the seat.
Having fully described-my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l l. A pair of drawers the sections of which are each formed with a front re-enforcing crotch-lap, C, having inclined or biased ends, whereby when the sections are joined the said laps will lie, one within the garment and one without, and in such position relative to the body of the fabric as to insure a crossing of theweft of the two thicknesses of material, as described.
2. A pair of drawers made of counterpart sections, each of which is formed with a semielliptical rear lap, B, and a front lap, C, the ends of the latter being biased, whereby the weft of each lap C will be at an angle to the weft of the body of the fabric, to form a reenforce of three thicknesses of material just below the iiy of the garment, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing 7 5 witnesses.
JOSEPH M. COX. Vitnesses:
A. J. CHEWNING, EDWARD T. RosE.
