DIAMOND-HOLDER FOR STONE-DRESSING TOOLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 297,728, dated April 29, 1884.
Application filed June 28, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
. Be itknownthat I, ABE L. TEEToR, acitizen of the United States, residing at Cambridge City, in the county of Wayne and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Diamond-Holders for Stone- Dressing Tools, and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in holders for diamonds, borts, carbons, or any other hard substance which is employed for cutting, carving, shaping, or dressing articles in any of the industries wherein they are applicable, the object of the same being to provide a cheap and efficient device that will combine simplicity and economy in construction with durability and efficiency. in use; and with these ends in view my invention consists in the parts and combinations of parts, as will be more fully explained and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of myimproved holder. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detached perspective yiew of the follower, and Fig. 4. is a similar view of the head.
A represents the head of the holder, made 7 of suitable metal, and preferably formed integral with a stem by means of which it is secured to a machine. Thishead is oblong in shape, and is provided with a central cavity, B, for the reception of the follower O, which latter conforms in shape to the said cavity. The head A is open at one end for the introduction of the follower, and is provided at its opposite end with an opening, a, for the passage of the screw D. v The face b of the head is also provided with an open slot, 0, communicating with the central cavity, B, for the insertion of the diamond.
The follower C can be angular or cylindrical in shape, as shown, and is adapted to snugly fit within the cavity B, so that it will have no unnecessarymovement, and is provided centrally with the female-screw-thread ed .hole for the passage'of the screw D. This follower is also provided at one end, around the central opening, with a series of notches of regular or irregular shapes and sizes, in
which the diamonds, &c., rest when the partsare locked in position. The screw D is first passed through the opening a of the head A, and the follower 0 brought into engagement therewith. By turningthescrew, the follower is drawn into the cavity B a suitable distance, and the diamond, bort, or carbon, &c., is placed in position in one of the notches of the follower. Now, by again turning the screw in the same direction, the follower is drawn inwardly and the diamond,&c., firmly clamped between the side of the head A and the adjacent end of the follower. When it is desired to remove or renew a diamond, the screw is loosened and the follower moved out sufficiently to admit of the introduction of the diamond. After the diamond has been placed in position the screwis again tightened. The follower is reversible-that is to say, either end thereof is adapted to hold the diamond in position. fectly plain, while the other can be notched, or both can be notched or plain, as circumstances demand.
This device is exceedingly simple in construction, is durable and effective in use, and can be manufactured at a small initial cost.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a recessed head, of the fol-lower, one end of which is provided witha series of notches, so as to accommodate diamonds of various shapes, and a screw for moving the follower, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a recessed head, of a reversible follower, one end of which is provided with a series ofnotches, and the opposite end plain, and a bolt for securing the diamond between the follower and head,substantially as set forth.
