No. 607,382 Claims priority, application Italy Sept. 7, 1955 '3 Claims. (or. 312-328) This invention relates to a container or waste receptacle for refuse or the like.
Various types of refuse containers generally made of zinc-plated sheet metal are known, but are objectionable in various respects. For instance, the zinc-plating wears with use, which results in rusting of the underlying iron and rapid destruction of the container.
Moreover, in known containers generally the bottom is not tightly sealed to the side walls, so that the containers are unfit to receive liquids or liquid-impregnated substances. They are, moreover, formed with inner and outer edges and recesses which are of diificult access for cleaning, so that deposits therein cannot be removed.
It is a purpose of this invention to provide a plastic waste receptacle obviating the above described drawbacks, which is moreover simple and inexpensive in construction and easy to clean in all its parts.
Another object of this invention is to provide a container or waste-receptacle which is equipped with automatic means for closing it after disposing of refuse into it.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a container which does not deteriorate with time and is therefore of practically unlimited duration.
The above and other objections which will be easily understood from the appended description are fulfilled according to this invention by a plastic waste receptacle comprising a molded waste-receiver adapted to receive refuse and a single-piece molded casing or housing for the receiver. The waste receptacle is fitted into the housing through an opening in the front wall of the housing and takes up with respect to the housing, two positions; a position in which the container or waste-receiver opens to the outside for filling purposes, and a position in which it is withdrawn into the housing.
The invention shall be described by way of a nonlimiting example with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a waste receptacle in a closed condition;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the receptacle in its open condition;
Figs. 3 and 4 are perspective views of a housing and waste-receiver respectively, forming in combination the waste receptacle of Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a sectional elevation view taken on line V-V of Fig. l; and it is illustrative of the positions the waste receiver is capable of assuming with respect to the housing thereof;
Fig. 6 is a sectional elevation view of the waste receiver and taken on line VIVI of Fig. 4; and
Fig. 7 is a horizontal section taken on two different levels, the upper half section being taken approximately on the line VIIVII in Fig. 5 and the lower half section being taken approximately on the line VIIa-VIIa of Fig. 5.
Referring to the drawings the waste receptacle according to the invention comprises a waste-receiver 1 in combination with a housing 2 shown in disassembled relation-- 2,977,175 Patented Mar. 28, 1961 ship in Figs. 3 and 4 and'in assembly in Figs. 1 and 2.
The receiver has trapezoidal shaped side walls 1a, 1b, a transversely arcuate front wall 10 which extends past the side walls, a rear wall 1d and a bottom 1e.
The front wall of the receiver is provided with laterally extending portions 3, 4 adapted to abut marginal portions 5, 6 of the housing 2 defining opposite side edges of a rectangular opening formed in the front body portion of the housing 2 through which the receiver 1 is received into the housing 2. i
The housing comprises substantially vertical side walls 2a, 2b of approximately trapezoidal shape, a vertical rear wall 20, an inclined front wall 2d in which the opening for receiving the receiver is formed and a curved top wall 2e.
The opening is defined by an arcuate lower edge 2f, and
the marginal portions 5 and 6 against which the laterally extending portions}, 4 on the receiver I bear when the receiver is in a seated position internally of the housing hereinafter further explained and limit inward movement of the receiver.
' The lower front housing body portion is formed with a base portion forming sill 10 forward of the opening and inclined downwardly in a direction away from the opening and projecting laterally beyond the portions 5 and 6 defining the opening.
The sill has opposite corners 10a, 10b next adjacent and below the side edges of the rectangular opening. These corners are rounded off downwardly in a laterally outward direction as shown. The lower edges of the marginal portions 3, 4 extending laterally of the receiver 1, bear on the corner of the sill which form limited bearing surfaces forming an articulated joint of the knife type for the receiver 1 on the housing 2.
The center of gravity of the receiver 1 is so located that, when the lower edges of the laterally extending portions 3, 4 bear on the corner surfaces 10a, 10b, the receiver takes a normal seated position shown in Figure l and in full lines in Figure 5, in which the top opening of the receiver is retracted within the housing and the marginal portions 5, 6 limit inward travel as indicated heretofore. In order to fill the receiver 1 it is angularly displaced to a waste-receiving position, shown in broken lines in Figure 5, by depressing a foot pedal 9 thereon. The receiver automatically resumes its original seated position after filling upon release of the foot pedal 9.
In order to remove the receiver from the housing for emptying purposes, a handle 8 is provided on the front wall 10 of the receiver. The foot pedal 9 is provided at the lower end of the wall 10. Both the handle 8 and the foot pedal '9 are preferably integral with the receiver. In the open position of the receiver the pedal 9 contacts the sill 10, and limits the outward movement of the receiver when selectively rocked to its waste-receiving position on the limited housing surfaces, and, moreover, the receiver is therefore kept against tilting backwardly and slipping out of the housing merely upon depressing of the pedal 9.
Both the receiver and housing are made of molded plastic, whereby any recess or sharp edge can be eliminated, so that washing and cleaning of the receiver and housing are facilitated. Moreover, any articulation which might stick owing to dirt deposits is avoided. A further advantage of the container or waste receptacle according to this invention is the fact that it closes automatically after filling.
The housing is provided with an integral top handle 11 for transport and is open at the bottom to prevent any dirt deposit.
It is understood that within the principle of the invention constructional details and forms can be widely varied from the example as described and illustrated without departing from the scope of this invention.
What I claim is:
1. 'In a waste receptacle, in combination, a single-piece molded housing for a waste receiver, said housing having a rectangular opening for receiving a waste receiver and having a base portion forming a sill forward of the opening and inclined downwardly in a direction away from the opening, a molded waste receiver normally housed in said housing in a seated position, said housing having a front body portion provided with said opening having 'a transversely arcuate lower part thereof defining a transversely arcuate lower edge on said opening, the receiver having afront wall transversely arcuate on at least a lower portion thereof extending laterally beyond opposite side walls of the receiver and cooperating with marginal portions of the front body portion of the housing on opposite side edges of said opening in limiting inward movement of the receiver, the lower edges of the laterally extending portions only cooperating with said sill for rockably supporting said receiver when rocked in a direction away from said seated position, means on said receiver for selectively rocking it away from said seated position in a direction opposite from a direction for seating the receiver in position thereby to render the receiver ready to receive waste in a waste-receiving position, said sill having opposite corners next adjacent the housing front body portion disposed adjacent and below the side edges of the rectangular opening, said corners being arcuate in configuration rounded off downwardly in a laterally outward direction, whereby the lower edge of the laterally extending portions of the receiver cooperate with the surface of the sill along limited bearing surfaces.
2. In a waste receptacle, in combination, a single-piece molded housing for a waste receiver, said housing having a rectangular opening for receiving a waste receiver and having a base portion forming a sill forward of the opening and inclined downwardly in a direction away from the opening, a molded waste receiver normally housed in said housing in a seated position, said housing having a front body portion provided with said opening having a transversely arcuate lower part thereof defining a transversely arcuate lower edge on said opening, the receiver having a front wall transversely arcuate on at least a lower portion thereof extending laterally beyond opposite side walls of the receiver and cooperating with marginal portions of the front body portion of the housing on opposite side edges of said opening in limiting inward movement of the receiver, the lower edges of the laterally extending portions only cooperating with said sill for rockably supporting said receiver when rocked in a direction away from said seated position, a foot-operated pedal integral with said receiver for selectively rocking the receiver away from said seated position in a direction opposite from a direction for seating the receiver in position thereby to render the receiver ready to receive Waste in a waste-receiving position, said pedal being disposed on said front wall at a point above said sill and adapted to make contact with said sill for limiting the outward movement of the receiver when selectively rocked to said waste receiving position, and said receiver being constructed sothat its center of gravity is disposed in a direction biasing the receiver toward said seated position when the receiver is in said waste-receiving position.
3. In a waste receptacle, in combination, a single-piece molded housing having a rectangular opening for receiving a waste receiver and having a base portion forming a sill forward of the opening and inclined downwardly in a direction away from the opening, a molded waste receiver normally housed in said housing'in' a seated position, said housing having a front body portion provided with said opening having a transversely arcuate lower part thereof defining a transversely arcuate lower edge on said opening, the receiver having a front wall transversely arcuate on V at least a lower portion thereof extending laterally beyond opposite side walls of the receiver and cooperating with marginal portions of the front body portion of the housing on opposite side edges of said opening in limiting inward movement of the receiver, means on said receiver for selectively rocking it away from said seated position in a direction opposite from a direction for seating the receiver.
