(Cl. 220-38) This invention relates to cans or containers, more particularly to garbage or refuse cans, and the main object is the provision of certain new and useful improvements in a combination can and non-separable cover therefor adapted to be slid from a position in which the cover closes the open top of the can to a position wherein the cover is against the back wall of the can, and vice versa. As a consequence, a garbage can provided with such a cover is not only covered in the usual manner when it contains refuse, but when the can is emptied into a refuse truck the cover remains secured to the can and thus eliminates mispl'acement of the cover or damage thereto.

The loss of garbage can covers is a common nuisance and the cause of annoyance as well as expense; moveover, sanitation ordinances usually provide a penalty for an uncovered can containing refuse.

The above broad as well as additional and more specific objects will be clarified in the following description wherein reference numerals refer to like-numbered parts in the accompanying drawing. It is to be noted that the drawing is intended solely for the purpose of illustration and that it is therefore neither desired nor intended to limit the invention necessarily to 'any or all parts or details of the drawings except insofar as they may be deemed essential to the invention.

Referring briefly to the drawing,

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a garbage can embodying the features of the present invention, with the cover in closed position.

Fig. 2 is a similar view except that the cover is in open position.

Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.

Fig. 4 is an enlargement of a portion of Fig. 3.

Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 55 of Fig. 1, but showing a slightly modified cover construction.

Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral indicates a can or container which is rectangular or square in cross-section, having the side walls 11 and 12, the back wall 13 and the front wall 14. The vertical edges of the latter are provided with forwardly extending opposed substantially S-shaped flanges 15, thus providing opposed rounded vertical grooves 16 with their open or concave sides facing each other and, at the outer ends of the S flanges grooves 17 have their concave or open sides facing away from each other.

The front wall 14 is attached to the side walls 11 and 12 by deforming the forward vertical edges of the side walls around and to conform with the outer or convex sides of the flanges 15 with the extremities of the deformed edges of the side walls registering in the grooves 17 and locked therein in any desired manner.

The cover 18, adapted to close the opening 19 at the top of the can, comprises the flat portion or plate 20. The latter has deformed side edges 21 turned down substantially at right angles, and a similarly turned down rear edge 21a. Secured against the inside wall of the plate 20 by any desired means or in any desired manner, is a second plate 22 of smaller width and length than the plate 20. The opposed side edges of the plate 22 are deformed substantially at right angles to the plate 22 to provide flanges 23 positioned between the cover flanges 21 and spaced therefrom; at their ends remote from the plate 22 the flanges 23 are rounded into extensions 24 complementary to and riding in the grooves 16. vIt is thus apparent that the cover may be raised or lowered in sliding contact or relationship with the front wall 14 of the can.

Along its upper edge the front wall 14 has an outwardly extending curved flange 26 whose extremities are spaced from the side edges of the front wall and whose crosssection is approximately a semi-circle. Along its front edge the cover plate 20 has a complementary curved flange 27 whose length of arc is greater than that of the flange 26, substantially as shown. The cover 18 is provided with a hand grip 28 near its rear edge; additional hand grips, not shown, may be provided on the side walls for lifting the can.

Assuming that the cover is in closing position on the can, as shown in Fig. l, the cover is constrained from lateral movement by the side flanges 21 and from forward movement by the rear flange 21a, and it is also constrained from rearward movement by registration of the flange 27 about the flange 26.

To uncover the can, instead of attempting to remove the cover completely, the cover handle 28 is lifted, whence the flange 27 thereof pivots about the flange 26, and with the cover in vertical position the same is released or pushed downward with its flange extensions 24 registering in and riding down in the grooves 16. The cover is stoppedin its descent by engagement of the flange 21a thereof with the top of the can, or with the tops of the side walls 11 and 12. A spring latch or friction catch 25 is mounted on the front wall 14, substantially as shown, in position to engage the cover at or near its lowermost position on the wall 14, tohold the cover frictionally against upward movement (with respect to the can) when the can is tilted or inverted.

To close or cover the can, the cover is lifted up the wall 14 and when its flange 27 registers about the flange 26 the cover is swung about the resultant pivot provided by these two flanges, into closed position.

Thus the can, with the cover in open position, may be readily emptied without detaching or losing the cover, and the can may be equally readily closed or covered again.

In the modified cover structure shown in Fig. 5, the various parts which 'are identical or equivalent to those described above bear the same reference numeral followed by suflix a. In this form the flange 27a is a separate member provided with a rearward extension 29 by means of which it is welded or otherwise secured to the cover plate 20a, and the latter is extended forward, as shown by its extension 20b, a distance suflicient to cover the flange 27a when the cover is in closed position. The side flanges 21 of the cover 18a remain of the same length as before, as shown in Fig. 1.

It is to be understood that the terms front and back as applied to the walls 14 and 13, respectively, are used above and in the appended claims merely for the sake of convenience in describing the invention; obviously either of these walls may be termed, or used as, the front or back wall.

We claim:

1. A container rectangular in horizontal cross-section having front and back walls and side walls, said front wall having curved flanges extending outward from the vertical side edges thereof, a rectangular cover for the container having on the sides thereof curved flanges complementary to and adapted to register in said first-named flanges to mount the cover slidably on said front wall, the top edge of said front wall having a curved flange extending outward and downward therefrom, the longitudinal extremities of said last-named flange being spaced from the side edges of the front wall, said cover having anadditional curved flange extending inward and upward with respect to the cover from the front edge thereof engageable about the flange on the top edge of the front wall and pivota'ble thereabout when the cover is in raised position on the front wall to a position wherein said side flanges of the 7 cover are clear of said first-named flanges to permit swinging of the cover into horizontal position'to cover the container. i I V 2. 3. A container according to claim 1, said cover having an extension on the forward edge thereofextending over and covering said additional curved flange and lying in the plane of said cover.
