Description

(No Model.)
T. DOUGHERTY. CHALK HOLDER'FOR BILLIARD AND OTHER GAME TABLES.
Patented Apr; 29, 1884.
WITNESSES! UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
TIBERIAS DOUGHERTY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
CHALK-HOLDER FOR BILLIARD A ND OTHER GAM E TABLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 297,684, dated April 29, 1884-.
Application filed November 6, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom/it may concern:
Be it known that I, TIBERIAS DOUGHERTY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Chalk-Holders for Billiard and other Game Tables, which improvementisfully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figurelis a side elevation of.a chalk-holder for a game-table embodying my, invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof in line a: as,
Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top or plan View thereof. Similar letters of reference indicate corre- I5'sponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consists of a device connect ible with a game-tablefor holding the chalk required for the cues, 810., whereby the same, after use, may be automatically returned to its normal position or place of support, and
the frame or case, being rotatable, conforms to the position of the player, so that the'cord runs in direct lines without friction or rubbing, and consequently with case.
Referring .to the drawings, A represents a frame or casingformed of metal or other suitable material, and having mounted within it a reel, B.
0 represents a coiled spring, one end of which 0 is secured to the shaft of the reel B and the other end to the bearings of said shaft, or any proper part of the casing A.
D represents a cord, which is wound on the reel B, and has connected with its outer end a 55 clamp, E, for the piece of chalk shown at F,
it being noticed that the casing has an opening, mouth, or spout, G, through which the cord D passes. The clamp E is formed of rubher or other elastic material, of cup shape,
40 somewhat contracted, so as to tightly embrace the chalk, the base havingan opening, a, for the passage of the cord D, and strengthened by a plate, b,.of metal or other suitable rigid material, to which the end of the cord is attached by knotting or other means. The chalk power of the clamp.
,, The frame or casing issecured to a proper part of the table by means of an annulus, H, which may,-however, be in sections-as1ugs the same having a flange or flanges, from which the frame or casing A depends, the upper end of the latter having a flange, A, which rests on the annulus H, thus forming bearings on which the frame or casing may rotate.
The operation is as follows: The chalk or clamp is grasped and advanced by the players, so as to chalk the cue, &c., as desired. The cord D follows, and, unwinding from the reel, causes the winding of the spring 0. As soon as the chalking is accomplished, the chalk is let go. and the spring 0, being no longer controlled, unwinds and causes the cord to bewound on the reel, and quickly returns the chalk to its first position, supported by the clamp on the mouth of the casing A. When the player changes'his position, the drawing rubber or other elastic or flexible material, to
receive the impact of the clamp when the chalk is returned to its normal position, the cushion thus provided assisting in preventing breakage of the chalk.
If desired, the embracing portion of the clamp E may be made of the form of arms or springs embedded in the base of said clamp.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A chalk-holder for a billiard or other game table, consisting of a chalk clamp or holding device, a cord, a reel, a spring, and a rotatable supportin g frame or casing, the clamp or holding device automatically returning to its normal position by the action of said spring, and the frame or casing moving relatively to the position of the player, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A chalk-holder for a game-table, having a cord for connection with the chalk, a winding device for said cord operating automatieally, and a frame or casing rotatably movable I 4. A chalk holder for a. gametable, conrelatively to the position of the player, sub- I sisting of a clamp or holding device, a. cord, at r0 stantially as and for the purpose set forth. reel, spring, and rotatable frame or casing,
3. In a chalk holder for a game-table, a substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
clamp formed of rubber, and a strengtheningi TIBERIAS DOUGHER'IY. plate connected therewith at the base, having 1 Vitnesses:
the cord attached to it, substantially as and 1 JOHN A. WIEDERSHEIM, for the purpose set forth.
