Be it known that I, MAX BOOKSTABER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Paterson, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display Devices, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to display devices and more especially to portable, motor driven devices.

Objects of the invention in part are to provide a novel device of the kind indicated which shall in a superior manner meet the requirements of actual use in the display and handling of merchandise and like things; to provide a novel motor driven, self contained device, which is compact, strong, and capable of carryingheavy loads, and which will operate in a satisfactory manner when the loads or displayed articles are unevenly distributed as to weight; to provide further a device of the kind described which is portable, and which may be easily taken down and set up, and which is complete and integral as it rests upon its own base, and which will permit of ready movement of the merchandise supporting parts independently andcombinationsherein shown and described. a

The accompanying drawings, referred to herein and forming a part hereof, illustrate one embodiment of the invention, the same serving in connection with the description herein to explain the principles of the invention. 7

Referring to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate by way of example one embodiment of the invention, a display rack is provided having a relatively heavy base and having the standard which supports the this base may be a casting. As embodied the base is shown of substantially cylindrical form, which conduces to compactness and also to ease of handling and gives also a neat and pleasing appearance which is likewise of great value in devices of this kind. The top of theba-se 1 in the embodied form serves also as a closure therefor, and consists of a plate 4 fitting over the top of the base and removablysecured thereto by suitable means such as the screws 5.

Within the base is the motor 6, the details of certain parts thereof not being necessarily described herein. The motor frame or casing comprises strong plates 7 and 8 which plates'are firmly secured to the casmg 1 byv suitable meanssuch as screws 9. The driving shaft for the*display device is indicated by numeral 10 and is journaled in the horizontal plates. 7 and 8. Said shaft 10 is vertically arranged and its lower end has a firm bearing 11 in the bottom plate 2 of the motor casing. Thus not only is a firm support provided for the end thrust on the shaft 10 due to the loadcarried, but the firmly united casing for the motor through the plates 7 and 8 keep the shaft 10 in vertical alinement. The pinion 12 on the shaft meshes with gears 13 and 14: which serve as driving connections from the motor. So far as concerns many features of the invention other suitable and convenient weight thereof and also the parts are so constructed and arranged as to prevent bending out of alinement or other damage thereto. In accordance with certain principles of the invention and usually preferably in actual construction this member is a pipe or tube 19 having a suitable bearing for the shaft 15 in its upper end. Means are provided whereby the merchandise supports may be located at different levels in connection with devices such as have been described. In the embodied form a tube 25 is provided encircling the tube 19, although so far as concerns certain features of the invention the member 25 might be of other form. At its upper end the tube 25 is provided with a top 26, integral therewith or inserted therein and connections are provided between the top 26 and the shaft 15. As embodied the shaft 15 is provided with a diminished squared and shouldered portion 27 which fits into a correspondingly shaped aperture in the top 26. Thus the tube or supporting member 25 is carried by the shaft 15 and rotates therewith.

The form of merchandise supporting and displaying means comprises a shelf 30, of glass or other suitable material, which may be adjustably supported by the part 25, by suitable means such as the flanged rings 31 which may be secured in position by suitable means, such as set screws 82 upon the mem ber 25. Also if desired a suitable ornamentaltop 33 may be provided for the upper end of the part 25 and this may if desired have suitable merchandise supports, such as the supports 34, attached thereto.

Suitable means are provided forfprevent- -ing backward rotation of the shaft 10, so

as to preserve the motor from injury. While the frictional bearing at the'surfaces 16* .17. will enable'the platform 30, or other merchandise support to be rotated by hand in either direction when it is desired' to take an article therefrom Without waiting for the support 30 to finish its rotation with the shaft 10, and at the same time the other and coeperating parts operate as described to preserve the parts in alinement.

Suitable openings and connections, such as p 35 and 36, respectively, may be providedfor winding the motor and for starting or stopping as desired. The reciprocating rods 35 are pivoted to arms 37 having pawls which actuate ratchet wheels 38 to wind the motor springs.

It will be seen that the embodied form realizes the objects of invention and the ad-' vantages herein set forth, together with other objects and advantages of great value in a device of this kind.

It will be understood further that variations may be made from the illustrated and described structure within the'scope of the accompanying claims without departing from the principles of the invention and without sacrificing its chief advantages.

That I do claim as my invention and desire wardly about the said hollow member, and a bearing between said supporting and displaying means and said hollow member near the bottom end thereof.

In a display device including in combination a supporting base comprising a casing, a motor inclosed within said casing, a stationary hollow member fixed to said casing and extending upwardly therefrom, a shaft connected to said motor and extending upwardly within said hollow member and beyond the upper end thereof, a bearing carried by said hollow member for the upper end of the shaft, an outer tube disposed around said inner tube and connected at its upper end to said shaft, article supporting devices carried by said outer tube, and a bearing between the lower end of said outer tube and said hollow member, said bearing being disposed adjacent said base.
