Specification of Letters Patent No. 29,706, datedAugust 21, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM McArnn, of Summerville, in the county of Cass and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Gate; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a front or face View of a gate (a portion being in section) constructed ac cording to my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan or top view of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of a portion of the same, taken in the line w, as, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detached View of the inner side of one of the gate posts, showing one of the plates of the fastenings.

To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A represents a vertical post or shaft which is at the center of a gate B, the gate being constructed in any suitable or proper way.
0, C are the gate posts, which are connected at their lower parts by a sill D; and E is a hollow cylinder, which is attached to the center of sill D, and has a concentric vertical flanch a, on its upper end, which fianch encompasses an opening 6, in the top of the cylinder. Within the cylinder E, another hollow cylinder F, is placed, and secured permanently. The upper surface of cylinder F, is cut so as to form two inclined planes 0, c, which have a horizontal surface (Z, at theirbottom and top endssee Figs. 1 and 2.
The lower part c, of the post or shaft A, is of smaller diameter than the upper part, and the former passes through the cylinder F, and through a hole in the sill, and is allowed to work freely up and down therein. Through the lower part c, of the post or shaft A, a pinGr, passes transversely and projects a suitable distance from said part, and rests on the inclined planes 0, c. The shoulder f, formed by the smaller diameter of the part 0, of the post or shaft A, has an annular recess 9, made in it to receive the fianch (z, of the cylinder E, when the gate is in a closed state.
At each end of the gate B, there is attached rigidly a metal plate It. These plates project a little distance from the stiles 2', 2', of the gate, and fit, when the gate is closed, in notched plates j, attached to the posts C.
H, H are two levers, which are attached by fulcrum pins 70, is, to vertical rods Z, Z, which are fitted loosely in proper guides m, attached to the gate B, a rod Z, being at each side of the gate. The inner ends of these levers are attached to the post or shaft A, as shown at n. The lower ends of the rods Z, Z, bear or rest on the top of the cylinder E.
The operation is as follows: WVhen the gate is closed the plates it, will be in the notched plates j, and the ends of the pin G, on the lower horizontal surfaces 03, at the bottoms of the inclined planes. To open, therefore, the gate, one of the levers II, is depressed and the shaft A, and gate B, are raised and the plates h, are elevated out of the notches of the plates j, and the ends of the traverse pin G, are brought in contact with the inclined planes 0, c, the gate is then turned and is elevated in consequence of the pin G, acting against said planes, and when a quarter revolution is made the ends of the traverse pin G, will pass on the upper horizontal surfaces (Z, at the tops of the inclined planes, and the gate will be then open, the end of the pin G, bearing against shoulders (I, at the ends of the upper horizontal surfaces (Z.
The gate, it will be seen, when in an open state is at right angles to its closed position. In order to close the gate a slight push, sufficient to shove the ends of the pin Gr, off the upper horizontal surfaces (Z, (Z, is all that is required, the gate then closing by its own gravity, the plates 72,, passing over the rounded edges of the notched plates j, into the notches thereof.
By this construction and arrangement a very strong and durable gate is obtained, the central post or shaft A, with the stiles .z', render the gate exceedingly stiff, and, in G011- sequence of the gate rising as it opens, the plates h, are not only raised out of the notches of the plates j, but the gate is allowed to pass above obstacles that may be beneath it. It has the advantage also of closing by its own gravity with a slight shove to move the ends of the pin G, from the upper horizontal surfaces d.
I do not claim broadly the elevating of a gate as it opens by means of curved inclined liftin levers H, H, rods Z, Z, cylinder E, in
plates, for such device may be seen combined dined? edged cylinder F, Within E, and pin 10 1' with hinges for the same purpose, but G, for the purpose herein set forth.
