Original application Apr. 30, 1959, Ser. No. 809,996,
now Patent No. 2,941,385, dated June 21, 1960. Di- .ggdzgzand this application May 11, 1960, Ser. No.
1 Claim. (Cl. 66-179) The present invention relates generally to the art of knitting and more particularly to Argyle hose decorated with the four yarn type of overplaid design wherein the overplaid forming yarns are color changed at a particular place in the hose to enhance the appearance thereof.
The present application is a division of United States Patent Number 2,941,385 issued June 21, 1960.
The objects of the invention will become apparent from the following detailed description of. a preferred form thereof, and from the appended claim.
In the drawings.
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of an Argyle hose having an overplaid design incorporated therein.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged view. of the leg portion of the hose of Fig. 1, split along its rear central wale, showing the disposition of its suture joined areas and of the over plaid design lines therein.
One example of overplaid decorated Argyle hose, made according to the present invention, is shown in Fig. 1, wherein the hose has the usual top portion 17, a leg portion 18 of solid color suture joined separate diamond shaped fabric areas ornamented With a four yarn type of overplaid design of the present invention, and the usual foot portion 19.
The overplaid design of the present invention is of the four yarn type wherein each straight line portion thereof extending between the center portions of a pair of adjoining areas (and across the suture line therebetween) is formed of a single yarn as distinguished from the eight yarn type of overplaid design wherein each similarly disposed straight line portion thereof is formed of a pair of yarns changed at the suture line, so that in the four yarn type a single yarn does the work of a pair of yarns in the eight yarn type.
In Fig. 2, the leg portion 18 of the hose of Fig. 1 has been shown as it would appear with the leg fabric severed along its rear central Wale and disposed in a fiat plane. The upper and lower diamond shaped fabric areas of the front of the hose are indicated at 20 and 21, respecitvely. The upper and lower diamond shaped fabric areas of the rear of the hose (here shown split) are indicated at 22 and 23, respectively. The upper half diamond, the middle diamond, and the lower half diamond shaped fabric areas of one side of the hose are indicated at 24, 25, and 26, respectively. The upper half diamond, the middle diamond, and the lower half diamond shaped fabric areas of the other side of the hose are indicated at 27, 28, and 29, respectively. Each of the several separate fabric areas 20 through 29 is joined to the fabric areas adjacent thereto by suture seams indicated at 30. It will be apparent that certain of the suture seams 30, in relation to certain of the fabric areas, may be considered as extending in zig-zag shaped paths. For example, the suture seams between the areas 20, 21 and the areas 24, 25, and 26, extend in a zig-zag shaped walewise extending path.
The fabric of Fig. 2 is provided with an overplaid design of the four yarn type formed of eight overplaid yarns indicated at 31, 31', 32, 32', 33, 33', 34, and 34', each pair of yarns 31, 31; 32, 32'; 33, 33; and 34, 34', being knit to form a generally .walewise extending zig-zag shaped line of design stitches so disposed that its straight line diagonal portions extend between the center portions of certain of the fabric areas and uninterruptedly across the oppositely extending zig-zag shaped path of the suture seams 30 therebetween.
The yarn 31 commences knitting at the center portion of upper side half diamond 27, continues diagonally across a suture seam 30 to the center portion of upper rear diamond 22, then ina reverse direction diagonally across a suture seam 30 to the center portion 'of side diamond 28 where its knitting terminates and the yarn 31' commences knitting in place thereof, the latter yarn continuing in a reverse direction diagonally across a suture seam 30 to the center portion of lower rear diamond 23, then in a reverse direction diagonally across a suture seam 30 to the center portion of lower sidehalf diamond 29, where its knitting terminates. The path of overplaid yarn 33, as it knits and as it extends from the center portion of upper side half diamond 24, to the center portion of front diamond 20, and to the center portion of side diamond 25, is generally parallel to the path of the overplaid yarn 31, while the path of overplaid yarn 33, as it knits and as it extends from the center portion of side diamond 25, to the center portion of front diamond 21, and to the center portion of lower side half diamond 26, is generally parallel lto'the path of overplaid yarn 31'. The knitting paths ofthe overplaid yarns 32, 32' and 34, 34' are parallel'and are reversely similar to the paths of the yarns 31, 31' and 33, 33. The yarn 32 extends fro m the center portion of upper side half diamond 27 (where yarn 31 also starts) to the center portion of front diamond 20 (to meet yarn 33) and then to the center portion of side diamond 28 (to meet yarn 31). Then the yarn 32 (replacing yarn 32) extends from the center portion of side diamond 28 to the center portion of lower front diamond 21 (to meet yarn 33') and then to the center portion of lower side half diamond 29 (to meet yarn 31) where its knitting terminates. The yarn 34 extends from the center portion of upper side half diamond 24 (where yarn 33 also starts) to the center portion of rear diamond 22 (to meet yarn 31) and then to the center portion of side diamond 25 (to meet yarn 33). Then the yarn 34' (replacing yarn 34) extends from the center portion of side diamond 25 to the center portion of lower rear diamond 23 (to meet yarn 31') and then to the center portion of lower side half diamond 26 (to meet yarn 33') where its knitting terminates.
The hose of the present invention wherein the lines of overplaid stitches extend diagonally between the center portions of adjoining fabric areas and uninterruptedly across the sutures therebetween, may be made by the method of the aforesaid application Serial No. 809,996. By changing the overplaid yarns at a particular place, namely at the center portions of side diamond areas 25 and 28, a crossed color overplaid design without floats will be obtained in the hose by the use of eight overplaid yarns. In Fig. 2, the yarns 31, 32', 34, and 33', indicated by dot dash lines, may be of a first color, while the yarns 32, 31, 33, and 34', indicated by dotted lines, may be of a second color. Thus the overplaid lines in the upper front diamond 20 and the lower rear diamond 23 are of said second color while the overpaid lines in the upper rear diamond 22 and the lower front diamond 21 are of said first color, and the overplaid lines in the side diamond areas are of both of said colors and are of crossed colors in the middle diamond areas 25 and 28 thereof.
While each of the eight overplaid yarns (which may also be referred to as design yarns) is shown as a single yarn and may be so referred to, it will be understood that each such single yarn may be made up of a composite of individual yarns or strands. 'It will also be understood that the body yarns of the fabric areas are caused to be floated to the rear of the overplaid design stitches, in a manner well known in the art.
I claim:
