2 Claims. (CL 248-49) This invention relates to braces for smoke stacks where the same are located in close proximity with relation to the walls of a building and in such conditions where it would not be possible to use guys to brace the stack. Also, the stack braces are provided for stacks which extend upwardly through wells formed in buildings, with the braces being provided to maintain the stack in relative vertical position with respect to the walls of the Well.
The principal object of the invention is the provision of a brace device which permits vertical expansion of the stack.
States Patent A second object is the provision of a stack brace which eliminates the necessity of providing an encrcling band around the stack and thus preventing the possibility of corrosion and rust attacking the stack with a deteriorating effect thereon.
A third object is the provision of a stack brace in which means are provided for lateral adjustment.
A further object is the provision of a stack brace which is simple of Construction, and which is economical to manufacture.
Still further objects and advantages of the invention will become more apparent in the course of the following description, and that which is new will be pointed ont in the appended claims.
In order that the invention may be more fully understood and appreciated, I will now take up a detailed description thereof in which the same will be more comprehensively set forth, with reference being had to the drawings forming a part hereof, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational detail of a smoke stack having braces embodying the features of the invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevaton of one of the braces with the same being shown extending between the smoke stack and an adjacent building wall.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the brace, as taken from line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a detail plan section through a stack and a well provided therefor and with there being four braces in connection therewith.
Figure 5 is an elevational view of one of the braces shown in Figure 4, as taken on line 5-5 of Figure 4, and With the brace shown being a modification of that shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3, in that the same incorporates a means of adjustment laterally therein.
Figure 6 is a detail plan view of the portion of the brace which is secured to the outer periphery of the stack.
Figure 7 is an elevational detail of the member shown in Figure 6, with the same being taken from line 7--7 of Figure 6.
Figure 8 is a detail plan of a portion of the interlocking member of the brace.
Figure 9 is an elevational view of the interlocking member, taken from line 9--9 of Figura 8.

Like reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, numerals 10 designate the smoke stack which is of the conventional type. Numerals 11 designate a building wall located in close proximity with relation to the stack.
In Figures 1, 2 and 3, I have shown the stack 10 held in spaced relation with the building wall 11 by means of braces, each being composed of a pair of members in interlocking relation with each other. The stack mernber is composed of an angular-shaped plate 12 having one side thereof formed to subs tantially coincide with the outer periphery of 'the stack and is adapted to be welded thereto by means of welds 13. The projecting portion of plate 12 has a tubular slide member 14 having a slot 15 formed vertically through the wall thereof and providing for the reception of the end portion 16 of the wall member 17. The upper end of member 14 is closed to prevent water from entering the tubular member, and with the closed upper end preventing the stack from sinking to the extent that the tubular slide member and the end portion 16 would become separated and thereby losing the bracing of the stack. End portion 16 is adapted for vertical movement with relation to the tubular member 14. Member 17 is rigidly secured, by welds 18, to the horizontal leg of a wall angle member 19. The Vertical leg of wall angle 19 s provided with apertures through which the wall angle is secured to a wall Construction by means of the bolts 20', as shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3.
Figures 4 and 5 show the stack braced in spaced relation to the walls of a building well and with there being lateral adjustment in the brace members. In Figures 4 and 5, the stack is designated by numerals 21, with a plate 12, the same in all respects as plate 12 shown in Figures l, 2 and 3, and has a tubular slide member 14 rigidly secured thereto in the same manrer as above described. The wall brackets shown in Figures 4 and 5 are each composed of a plate 22 having a tube-engaging portion 23 formed on one vertical edge and with the tube-engaging portion being adapted to fit into tube 14 with plate 22 projecting outwardly through slot 15. Plate 22 is provided with apcrtures for bolts 24 by means of which plate 22 is adjustably secured through slots 25 of wall plate 26, as shown in Figures 4 and 5. Plate 26 is secured to the wall angle 27 by means of welds 28. The wall angle is rigidly secured through the Well wall 30 by means of bolts 29.
It will be noted, by referring to Figures 1, 2 and 3, that with the bracket extending between the wall and the stack, the stack can expand and contract vertically with the plate 12 and tubular member 14 being carried by the stack, and with tubular member 14 being adapted to move vertically on portion 16 of the wall bracket.
The device, as shown in Figures 4 and 5, provides means permtting vertical expansion and contraction of the stack and, in addition, there is provided therein means permtting lateral adjustment of the bracket to compensate for vertical variations in the well walls and also to compensate for variations of distances between the stack and the well walls which may be encountered in difierent wells.
A distinct advantage provided by the invention is that the same eliminates the possibility of corrosion and rust on the surface of the stack which is present where bands are used around and in contact with the outer periphery thereof.
It is desired that it be'understood that I am not to be limited to the exact arrangement of the device or the parts thereof as shown and described, but that minor changes may be made therein, insofar as the changes tsubstantially ?Parallel alignment With relation thereto, an
angular-shaped plate having one side thereof Secured to the stack, a tubular slide member Secured to an eX- tended portion of the ,angularl-shaped plate, a slot fo rmed vertically in the side of the tubular slide memberwith theslot being faced away from the stack and the angular -shapedplatan angular member adapted tobe ecured on the vertical face of a well, a plate wall membensecuredlto and carried by the angular member and extending toward thestack, a second tubular slide 'rnembensecured cn the extended plate wall member,
with the second tubular slide member fitted into the first tubular slide member, and with the first tubularslide member being adapted for vertical movement with relation to the second tubular slide member.
