Description

SCOTT.
FENGE POST.
Patented Apr. 8, 1884.
(No Model.)
I INVBNTOR ATTORNEYS.
.EEVWUWEZWWE UNITED STATES PATENT Fries.
LEGRAND SCOTT, OF NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE.
FENCE-POST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 296,632, dated April 8, 1884.
Application filed December 3. 1883. (No model.)
To do whom it 71mg concern.-
Be it known that I, LEGRAND Soo'r'r, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts;- and I do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in whichi Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved fence-post. Fig. 2 is an enlarged front View of a portion of the same; and Fig. 3 is a cross-section through line a: x in Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention relates to that class of metallic fence-posts (more particularly adapted for barbed-wire fencing) in which the post is provided with a pointed head at its lower end, to adapt it to be more readily inserted into the ground, side flanges or wings adapted to assist in supporting the post in its vertical position, and slotted projections provided with oblique slots through which the wire is inserted; and it consists in the improved construction of apost of the above-described class, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
I prefer to make my improved fence-p0st of cast-iron, and of any suitable dimensionssay from six to seven feet long if intended for seven wires, and proportionally shorter if intended fora less number. The lower end of the post is cast with a point or arrow-head, A, to facilitate its insertion into the ground, and above this arrow-head the base of the post is provided with side flanges or lateral.
wings, B B, the lower ends of which taper down to the stem 0, which connects the base or broadest part of the post with the arrowheaded point A. The body of the post Dis made tapering, and is provided with a re-enforcing rib, E, extending from the base about half-way up the length of the post, more or less. That part of the base between the wings B B has an aperture, F, for the insertion of a cross-bar, G, when the post is used in sand or soft soil, so as to steady the post and hold it in its proper position. If used in ordinary compact soil, this cross bar G will not be required. The front side or face of the post is cast with slotted projections H, adapted to receive the strands of round or flat wire, which are inserted into the slots I through the oblique slots J, cut through the projections H. Thus it will be seen that the fence-wire may readily be inserted through the oblique openings J into the slots I when loose or slack; but when the wire is drawn taut it is impossible for it to slip out through the oblique openings, so that the several strands of wire will be locked or fastened firmly to the post aslong as the fence is in use without any other means of fastening than those which are integral with the post. I am aware that metallic fence-posts have been heretofore constructed in which the post is provided with a pointed head at its lower end to adapt it to be more readily inserted into the ground, side flanges or Wings adapted to assist in supporting the post in its vertical position, and slotted projections provided with oblique slots through which the wire is in sorted, and I do not therefore claim such construction, broadly;- but hat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
The improved metallic fence-post herein shown and described, consisting of the tapering body D, having re-enforcing rib E, projections H, slotted at I and cut across obliquely at J, wings B, aperture F, tapering stem G, and arrow-head A, all in'one piece, and crossbar G, adapted to be inserted through the aperture F, substantially as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LEGRAND SCOTT. \Vitnesses:
FRANK GUTHRIE, JOHN D. Burns.
