Description
(N 0 Model.)
J. A. PUTTQ BRAKE FOR HAY WAGONS. No. 2961520. latented Apr. 8, 1884.
UNITED STATES ATENI tries.
JQSEPH A. PUTT, OF MARLBOROUGH, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ISAIAH S. FRANCE, OF SAME PLACE.
BRAKE FOR HAY-WAGONS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,620, dated April 8, 1884.
- Application filed January 25, 1884. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, JosnrH A. PUTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marlborough, in the county of Stark and-Stateof Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon-Brakes for Hay- Racks; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure l is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a top view. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of rockbar and its parts. Fig. 4 is a transverse section of rock-bar.
The present invention has referenceto means for attaching and operating brakes for hayracks; and it consists in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter particularly set forth and claimed.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the ladder or frame, which is preferably attached to the front or forward end of the rack by means of the rock-bar a. Said rock-bar is attached to the rack in the ordinary manner,-
and is provided with a suitable support and bearing for the bottom or lower end of the brake-rod B. The top or upper end of this ladder is also provided with a suitable bearing for the top or upper end of the brakerod B. The rock-bar a is provided with the cogwhcel C, located as shown, and is rigidly at tached to the revolving shaft D. The cogwheel 0 should be grooved, for the purpose hereinafter specified.
may be formed separate and attached, and is for the purpose of operating the several parts of the brake, as hereinafter described.
The object of forming a groove upon the cog-wheel O is to give more working-surface for the screw d.
To the outer end of the shaft D is attached the arm or lever B, to which armor lever is attached the connecting-rod F. The rear end of said rod F-is attachedin the ordinary manner to the brakelever G, as shown in the drawlngs.
The construction described forms a very simple and effective means for operating the brake from either the top of a load of hay or from any position from a horizontal to a perpendicular when the wagon is without a load.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the hinged frame, the pinion, and revolving shaft connected with the lower end of the frame, the rod supported by said frame, and provided at its lower end with a screw meshing with said pinion, the brakes, and means connecting the same with the revolving shaft carrying the pinion, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the frame connected to the wagon at its lower end by a rock-bar, a revolving shaft journaled in said rock-bar, and provided with a pinion fitting in an opening made in said bar, a rod journaled in suitable bearings on said frameand provided with a screw at its lower end, meshing with said pinion, the brakes, and the rod connecting them with the pinion-shaft, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH A. PUTT.
. Witnesses:
MICHAEL Krnscnnowsnn, FRED W. BOND.
