Description
J. L. HARRISON. V/ WAGON BRAKE.
Patented May 1, 1883.
WITNESSES n' u ATTORNEYS UNTED STATES PATENT Orrin a,
JAY L. HARRISON, OF LEBANON, INDIANA.
WAGON-BRAKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,686, dated May 1, 1883.
- Application filed September 18, 1882. (Model.)
To all whom zt may concer-n Be it known that I, JAY L. HARRISON, of Lebanon, in the county ot' Boone and State ot' Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon-Brakes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdraw ings, which form a part of' this specification.
This invention relates to wagon-brakes,and appertains especially to that class of brakes that will lock the wagon while going downhill, and has for its object to provide simple, durable, inexpensive, and eiiicient mechanism for readily effecting this endwithout interfering with any backward movement of the vehicle.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the running-gear of a wagon, the body being removed. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a cross-section in l detail on the line x m, Fig". 2. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the hinged brake, and Fig. 5 is a sectional detail View of the latter.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the front axle-tree; B, the axle, and C G the wheels. On axle-tree B are arranged the hounds D D, carrying the reach-plate E and front bolster, F. G is the rear axle-tree; H, the axle, and I I the wheels. On axle-tree G are arranged the rear hounds, J J, which support the rear bolster, K. L is the reach, extending forward to the king-bolt M. I
The front ends of front hounds, D D, are provided on their under side with a plate, N, which supports the sliding tongue O, the latter moving between the ends of the hounds, and with its rear end in a. groove, P, in the under edge of a cross-brace, Q, on the hounds. Tongue O is provided with a plate, R, through which passes the vertical pin S, that secures the double-tree T. To the top of pin S is pivoted a rearward] y-extendin g connect-in g-rod, U, pivoted at its rear end to a lever, V, having its fulcrum-bearings in a bracket, W, on thereach. This p'votal connection of rod U is preferably accomplished by passing its `end through a loop, X, at the top end of lever V and pivotin g it to a swivel-bolt, Y, workin g in loop X.
Through a perforation, Z, in the lower end of lever V, passes a V-shaped connectingrod, A', having its ends B' I3 pivoted to the inner ends ot' the lever-i C O', arranged on a crossboard, D', supported by the rear hounds, J J. Spring-braces E extend from the pivot of levers C rearwardly to the axle-tree G.
On the outer ends ol' levers C O are ar-` In lieu ofthe connecting-rod U, a horizontalbar, N', may extend from the tongue. The rear end ot' this bar is bifurcated, and the arms O O', thus formed, pass through openings P' in the front holster. The rock-shaft Q at the rear of arms Ol O is then connected to lever V by a suitable rod. (Not shown.)
The operation and advantages of my inventonwillbereadilyunderstood. Ingoingdownbill the back-pressure of the horses causes the tongue to slide back, which operates rod U to throw lever V over, causing the said lever to draw the inner ends of the levers U" C' forward, while its outer ends clamp the brakes against the wheels. The brakes act ou the wheels only when they are moving forward. In simplybacking the wagon the brakes will ofcourse be clamped against the wheels in the manner above described; but the brakes, by being hinged as shown, offer no resistance to the backward movement ol' the wheels.
The combination of the front hounds hav ing a cross-brace the under side, and provided is pivoted the double-tree bya pin or bolt, the connecting-rod secured to said double-tree pin and extending rearwardly, the vertical lever pivoted in brackets at the front of the rear provided with the groove in the tongue slidingin said groove with the top strap, under which IGC hounds, the Vshaped connecting-rod, having my own I have hereto affixed my signature in its vertex or center passing through a perforapresenceof two Witnesses. tion in the lower end of the vertical lever, the
brake-levers, and the brake-plates hinged ou JAY L' HARRISON" 5 the said levers and carrying the detachable Witnesses:
brake-shoes, as set forth. C. OOPELAND,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as JOHN L. PIERCE.
