UNITED STATES PATEN T FFICE.
EDWARD BACKUS, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
PROPELLER FOR CANAL-B OATS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 29,660, dated August 21, 1860.
To all whom it 'may concern: p
Be it known that I, EDWARD BAGKUS, of
Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Canal-Boat Propellers; and I do hereby declare 'that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l, is'a plan, showing the oscillating or adjusting frame C, engines D, propelling wheel B, and the windlass E. Fig. 2, is a vertical longitudinal section, the dotted lines representingthe position of the frame C, and wheel B, when in action.
The nature of my invention will be understood by reference to the claim and drawings.
I construct the hull with an opening, for the reception of the wheel B, frame C, &c., which may be in the stern, as shown in the drawings, or at any other desirable point. The frame C, is firmly secured to the boat by means of the journal boxes J. The engines D, are fixed to the frame C, and therefore always retain their relative position to the cranks.
Steam may be conveyed from the boiler to the engines through any iieXible pipe.
The wheel B, may be ten feet in diameter, more or less, with ribs on its periphery, and it is raised by the windlass E.
By placing the wheel in the rear of the axis of' the frame C, the power is applied 'more directly, and the wheel is less liable to slip, than when it is located in front, or even beneath. It will also be seen that the wheel, when hung in this way, rises over any obstruction on the bottom with the most perfect ease, while in either of the other cases, it would strike dead against the same 0bstruction, and be constantly racking the boat and machinery to pieces.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of the engines I), frame C, wheel B, and windlass E, the whole constructed and operated substantially as, and for, the purposes specified.
E. BACKUS.
