Description

Yio
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELBRIDGE WEBBER, OF GARDINER, MAINE, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, G. W. WAITT, OF SAME PLACE, AND N. B. STARBUCK AND G. H. STARBUCK, OF TROY, NEW YORK.
MARINE PROPELLER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 28,542, dated May 29, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELBRIDGE WEBBER, of Gardiner, in the county of Kennebec and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Propellers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, forming part of this specification, in the several figures of which similar characters of reference denote the same parts.
Figure l, is a side view of the propeller. Fig. 2, is a rear view of same. Fig. 3, is a perspective view. Fig. 4, is a similar view with blades slightly curved. Fig. 5, is a top view showing position of blades with respect to axis of shaft.
This is a propeller with two blades, each making an angle of about 45 with the axis of the shaft, so set upon the hub as to be entirely forward of the rear portion thereof, and on opposite sides of a plane passing through the axis of the shaft, the details of construction and operation being as follows: In the drawing S is the shaft, and H the hub to which is attached the blades B B.
The blades may be cast with the hub or attached thereto by any method suitable to that end. They are slightly elongated in direction of shaft as seen in Fig. 3, and have such a relation to the hub that the entire blade is forward of a plane at the rear extremity of the hub and perpendicular to its axis. The blades are on opposite sides of a plane passing through the axis of the shaft, so that they will not overlap each other as shown in Fig. l. The advantage of this construction lies in the fact that the blades are at all times enabled to press upon water that has not already been acted upon by the o posite blade, as must be the case where t e blades project to the rear of the shaft.
I claim- The construction of propellers with the two blades B B shaped as described and placed at about an angle of 45 with the axis of shaft, on opposite sides of a plane through said axis, and altogether forward of the rear extremity of the hub substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name before two subscribing Witnesses.
ELBRIDGE WEBBER.

GEO. W. WAITT.
