M. V. LONGSWORTH.
NECK YOKE,
Patented Apr 8', 1884.
" TTDRNEYS WITNESSES N. PETEM Phmo-hmugapher, Wnhinghon. 0,1;
UNITED STATES MIROiN V. LONGSWORTH, OF DELPHOS, OHIO.
NECK-YOKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,589, dated April 8, 1884.
Application filed February 4, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MIRON V. Loncswonrn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Delphos, in the county of Allen and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Neck-Yokes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l of the drawings is arep'resentation of this invention and is a front view. Fig. 2 is a vertical section. Fig. 3 is a front view, partly in section. Fig. 4 is a detail showing a perspective view of the two plates fitted together.
This invention has relation to neck-yoke centers; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of a clamping device, whereby the leather center is secured to the yoke-bar, and in the combination, with the leather center, of front and rear clamp-plates and ihstening bolts or screws, all as hereinafter set forth. r
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates aneck-yoke center, made of leather in the ordinary manner, and having the sleeve portion B adapted to he slipped on the yokebar 0 to the middle thereof, where it is seated in a circumscribing recess or channel, D, be-
tween shoulders E ofsa'id bar.
In order to tighten and secure the sleeve portion of the leather center upon the bar, it
has heretofore been customary to sew it in place. The object of this invention is to avoid this operation, and to provide a neater and stronger fastening, which is also more readily applied. 1 have therefore devised an elongated inetallic clamp for this purpose, which consists, as usually constructed, of two elongated and perforated plates and two bolts or screws. The front plate, F, is formed with inwardly-turned end flanges, G, the upper edges of which are beveled or made concave, or in shape to fit neatly up into the recess of the yoke'bar or against the shoulders thereof. The inner upper portion of the body of the plate is beveled longitudinally, as at H, so that it will correspond in form to the recess or center seat of the bar, and will fit snugly against the leather sleeve of said center when in position thereon. The back plate, K, is similarly beveled along the inside of its upper edge, as at L, and it is provided with lugs or projections P, which project over the ears or flanges G of the front plate, and serve as guiding-catches to hold the plate in proper position with relation'to the front plate and to the leather center until the fastening-bolts Z are passed through the perforations m of the plates and through apertures in the leather center and tightened up.
In some instances I may provide a lining, c, of sheet-metal, to be placed inside the sleeve of the leather center, the end flanges of said lining projecting out-ward betweentheleather walls sufficiently for perforations made therein, as at s, to engage the fastening bolts or screws.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. The combination, with a leather neckyolie center, oi the rectangular elongated clampingplate F, having end flanges, G, the plate K, having lugs P, with perforations m, and bolts or screws, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the elongated clamping-plate F, having its inner edge beveled, as shown, and provided with the end flanges, G, having their inner edges beveled, the plate K, having its inner edge beveled, and the respective plateshaving vertical perforations, the yoke-bar 0, having its central portion recessed and provided with annular shoulders E, the leather center, and bolts or screws, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
