UNITED STATES PATENT 'Orricn.
'ELIJAH HARVEY YVHEELER, OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS.
LOCK-STITCH RIPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,492, dated April 8, 1884. Application filed October 17, 1883. (No model.)
' a citizen of the United States, residing at Gorpus Christi, in the county of Nueces and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Improveruent in Lock-Stitch Rippers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improved combination tool or implement designed to be used in connection with sewing-machines,and combining in a convenient form several instruments which operators on sewing-machines should always have ready at hand.
The invention consists, specifically, of a handle having severalfolding blades, like an ordinary pocket-knife, one of which blades is a lock-stitch ripper, another a hook for holding material in position to be sewed, and the third an ordinary knife-blade.
The construction and arrangement of the several parts will behereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is'a perspective view of the device with the several blades open or unfolded. Fig. 2 is a side view on an enlarged scale of thelockstitch ripper, and Fig. 3 is a side view on an enlargedscale of the the holding-hook.
The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.
Ain the drawings designates the handle, which is that of an ordinary pocket-knife, and which is provided with blades B, O, and D. One of the said blades, B, is forked, as at E, the inner edges of the said fork being ground sharp, so as to be capable of cutting the thread, as is the purpose of tlmsaid blade. One of the prongs G of the forked blade B is rounded, as at H, the object being to utilize the said blade for picking the threads out of the fabric after being cut or ripped. The second blade, 0, is formed or provided with a sharp-pointed hook, K, which may be used as aerochet-hook, but the principal use of which is to assist the operator in pushing or pulling the material to be sewed under the presserfoot of the machine, especially when attachments such as the hemmer or gatherer are used. The fingers of the operator, when such attachments are used, are too clumsy to pull or push the material into place, and hence the hook provided in my improved implement will be found useful. The blade Dof the device is an ordinary knife-blade, the uses of which are manifest.
This invention provides in a simple and ac cessible form several implements which are important and useful for operators on sewingmachines. It is inexpensive, convenient, and durable.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States As an improvement in rippers, the combination, with the knife-handle A, of the lockstitch ripper comprising the blade B, bifurcated or slotted centrally at one end, the adjoining edges'of which are beveled inwardly and ground sharp, one prong of said blade being rounded, as and for the purpose set forth. In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ELIJAH HARVEY WHEELER.
