To rtZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, DANIEL L. S'rnvnns, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Lyons, in the county of Clinton and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Levers for Shifting Saws on Edgers and other Devices for Cutting Lumber, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to devices for shifting saws in edging-machines; and it consists of the construction and combination of the devices which are embraced in the clai1ns,and are hereinafter fully set forth.
In the drawings, Figure l is a longitudinal section of the shifter. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same. Fig. 3 isaperspective view of a portion of the leverplatc detached. Fig. i is a perspective view of one of the guide-pin blocks detached.

B is a bifurcated head, connected at B to the plate B bya pivotal or hinged joint adapted to enable the head to be raised away from the saw, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1. The plate 13 is provided with the longitudinal slots a a, to receive the bolts 0 D, by which the plate is fastened to the levei, and is constructed with the offset or step b, to extend the plate and its connecting-lever downward and under the rollers P, which carry the lumber R to be edged, as seen in the drawings.
F is the lever portion of the shifter,provided with the transverse slot 0 and the pivotal studs E c and the gage-dog G.
H designates blocks provided with the gui depins L. One of these blocks is attached to each prong of the head B by a single bolt, N, extended vertically through holes in the center of the block and through the prong, to allow lateral oscillatory movements of theblocks, so as to adjust the guidepins to the position of the saw. The bearing-shoulders and ends of the joint by which the head B and plate B are connected are beveled, as shown, to hold the head firmly when in position for use.
K is a bed-piece, to which is bolted the frame or yoke a, which is provided with the set-screw E. The lever-plate F is extended through this yoke, in position for the inner end of the set-screw to have its bearing in a cavity in the upper end of the stud E, the lower pointed end of the lower stud, 0, having its bearing in a cavity in a stud, M, on the bedplate K, or in a cavityin the lower plate of the yoke.
J is a gage-bar provided with notches (l the requisite distance apart to receive the dog G. The longitudinal slots a a in the plate/B enable the shii'ter to be adjusted in length to adj ust it to the position of the saw without changing the positions of the bed-plate K and gagebar J. The transverse slot 0 in the leverplate F allows lateral adjustment of the end of the plate 13 which, combined with the oscillatory movements of the pivoted blocks H, carrying the guide-pins, enables the operator to adjust the bifurcated head in line with the saw sufficiently to avoid binding or unnecessary friction of theguide-pins against the saw in all the different positions in which the lever may be required to be placed in shifting the positions of the saw. By means of the pivoted bearings of the lever and the gage-dog and bar, the lever is readily oscillated and adj usted to the required position to set the saw to cut the lumber the required width.
