ALBERT GEORGE GOODBODY,
OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
BINDING-POST FOR ELECTRIC CONDUCTORS.
' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,160, dated April 1, 1884.
Application filed November 30, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT GEORGE Goon- BODY, of Louisville, in the county of J efferson and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and Improved Binding-Post for Electric Conductors, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in binding-posts for connecting electric conductors; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth, and pointed out in the clai ms.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of my improved binding-post on the line a? .r, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional elevation of the same on the line 3 y, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line 5 z, Fig. 2.
A standard, A, is secured on a base, B, by a screw, 0, screwed through the base into the lower end of the standard, with which screw the conducting wire or strip isconnected. The standardA is provided atits upper end with an annular flange, a, or a crosspiece, and on the standard a cap, D, is held loosely, which cap is pressed upward by a spiral spring, E, surrounding the standard A, and acting on an annular flange, d, or a cross-piece formed on the lower end of the cap. in the upper end of the cap D a button or head, F, of insulating material is screwed or otherwise fastened. The standard A is provided with a longitudinal groove, G, into which the inner end of a pin, H, passes, which is held in the flange (Z of the cap, and holds the cap from turning. The standard A is provided at its upper end with an aperture, J, and the cap D is provided with two opposite apertnres, K, which can be brought in line wit-h the aperture J. The flange a prevents the spring E from pressing the cap D upward too far, as the inner edge of the bottom flange, d, of the cap D rests closely against the standard A, and strikes against the bottom edge of the flange a when the cap D is raised as far as possible. If the pin L, se-
cured to the conductor, is to be held in the binding-post, the cap D is depressed until the apertures J and K are in line, and then the pin L on the end of the wire is passed through the said apertures and the pressure on the head is removed. The spring E presses the cap D upward, and the bottom edges of signed and adapted for use in medical batteries, for therapeutic batteries, and also for ordinary electrical purposes. The insulated top enables the physician or electrician to change the current with greater facility ,while treating the patient, and without in any way diverting the current from the patient.
I am aware that a binding'post for elec trical instruments, consisting of a chambered post and a headed spring-pressed interior plug having its motion limited by a pin passing through a groove made in the chambered post and plug, has heretofore been employed; and I am also aware that a binding post capped at its upper end, provided with a hole for the passage of a wire near its upper end, and a spring-pressed collar for binding the wire, is old, and I therefore lay no claim to such inventions.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with the binding-post A, provided with the peripheral longitudinal groove G, of the spring-pressed cap D, pr0- vided with the perforated flange d, and pin H, passing through the perforation in the flange, and having its end resting'in the groove G, to prevent the cap from turning, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with the base 13, screw 0, binding-post A, provided with the peripheral longitudinal groove G, aperture J, and top annular flange, a, of the loose cap D, having the perforated bottom flange, cl, apertures K, insulated button F, pin H, spring E, and pin L, substantially as shown and described.
-ALBERT GEORGE GOODBODY.
