INSULATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming partof Letters Patent No. 303,483, dated August 12, 1884.
Application filed April 1, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, CHAELEs DE ROY BAI- LEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Missoula, in the county of Missoula and Territory of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Insulators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art'to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this'specitication, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved insulator for electric wires, showing it in position upon the cross-piece of a post. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the several parts detached.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to insulators for electric wires 5 and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of the same, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates a screw-threaded shank, which may be inserted into the post or cross-piece or other object where it is desired to attach the insulator, and the upper end of the said shank forms a socket, B, provided with perforated lugs or ears O upon its sides, and having a recess, D, which is preferably spherical, having two diametrically-opposite notches, E, in its edge and forming a step, F, at its edge. A cap, G, iits with its stepped lower edge upon the stepped edge of the socket, has preferably a spherical recess, and two diametrically opposite notches, H, corresponding to the notches in the edge of the socket, and is provided upon its top with a perforated lug or ear, I. Two hemispherical blocks, J, of glass or other nonconducting material are placed in the socket and in the cap, and have diametrical grooves K in their meeting-surfaces, in which grooves the wire may rest, passing out through the notches inthe cap and the socket. A wire, L, is passed through the ears upon the socket and across the cap through the ear upon the same, whereupon its ends are united, which will serve to secure the cap upon the socket. In this manner it will be seen that the insulating material is perfectly protected, and at the same time the wire is perfectly insulated.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States In an insulator for electric wires, the combination of a socket having a spherical recess, stepped edges having diametrically-opposite notches, perforated ears upon its sides, and a threaded shank, a cap fitting upon the edges of the socket, having a spherical recess, diai'netrically-opposite notches in its edges, and a perforated ear upon its top, and two hemispherical blocks, of non-conducting material, having diainetrical grooves in their meeting surfaces, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature inv presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES DE ROY BAILEY.
