J HN FARREL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SAFE-DEPOSIT BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,153, dated April 1, 1884.
Application filed October 20, 1882. (ModeL) V i .To all whom it may concern; Be it known that I, JOHN FARREL, of the city of New York, N. Y., have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safe'Deposit Boxes, whereof the following is a specification.
In safe-depositsafes or boxes it has been customary to encumber the interior with a rabbetor striking-bar for bringing the door to a stop at the proper place in closing. This is objectionable, since it is a great desideratum to have the removable inner box to occupy all the interior space of the safe-deposit box or cell, while free to be inserted and removed I 5 through the door-opening without obstruction,
and such a bar necessarily reduces the dimensions of the removable box. As a substitute for such striking-bar, a piece of metal or lip has been formed on the outer edge of the door, projecting beyond the edge, and so as to strike against the outside of the safe in shutting the door but this is in the way, and when cast on the door, as is usual, is liable to be broken off in use.
My improvement consists in applying a stop to the inside of the door at the rear or hinged side, and adapting the same to bring the door to a full stop in closing, with the face of the door flush with the outside of the safe. The improvement is seen in the 'annexed drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a fragment in elevation of a series of safe-deposit boxes. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of one or more such boxes in series. V
A A will represent the usual division-walls forming the safe-depositlboxes, which walls may be of any desired construction. B is the removable box, made the full size of theinterior of the safe. 0 is the door. Upon theinside, near the rear or hinged side thereof, I affix the lug or stop F, in any suitable manner,
and in such location as to strike against the inside of the saledeposit box or cell of the safe in closing the door, and bring the door to a full stop, with the outer surface flush with the outside of the safe or deposit boxes.
The device is cheap and easily applied, avoiding any projectionon the outside of the door. On the other hand, it does not extend objectionably into the safe, but occupies no more room than the thickness of the ordinary lock used, and hence allows the removable box B tobe made the full size of the interior of the safe box or cell. It is also neat in finish, and can be used for adjustment as by the screwstud E.
I claim as my inventionl. The combination, with the door of asafedeposit box, of a lug fixed to the door near the hinged side. and adapted to strike solidly against the inside of the box or safe, so as'to bring the door to a full stop or limit in clos ing, as set forth.
2. In combination, the safe-deposit box, the removable box B, the stoppiece or lug F, adapted to the insideof the door for bringing the same to a fixed limit in closing, and provided with the stud E, for adjustment, as set forth.
JOHN FARREL.
