SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,132, dated April 1, 188%.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. CHAMBERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Merchantville, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ties for Umbrellas and Parasols,which improvement is fullyset forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure l is a side elevation of an umbrella having a tie or fastening embodying myinvention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged View of the tie removed from the umbrella. Figs. 3 and 4 show opposite faces thereof. Figs. 5 and 7 are views of detached parts thereof. Fig. 6 is a section in line 50 m, Fig. 5; and Fig. 8 is a section in line y y, Fig.7.

My invention consists of a tie for an umbrella or parasol, formed of a band or strap with an attached hook and eye, whereby the ends of the band may be readily and securely and the objectionable featuresof the ring and button heretofore employed are obviated.

Referring to the drawings, A represents an umbrella of usual form and construction. B represents the tie for retaining the umbrella in a folded condition, the same consisting of a band or strap, 0, of suitable material, a hook, D, and eye IE, it being noticed that said hook and eye are secured to the band on opposite faces near the ends, and the band is attached -tothe umbrella at the end adjacent to the eye, the eye appearing on the outside of the band. When the umbrella is folded, the band is run around the same, and the hook D fitted to the eye E, thus connecting the ends of the band and securelyretaining the umbrella in folded condition.

The hook and eye are covered by the overlapping end 0' of the band, which extends beyond the hook, thus concealing the fastening or hook and eye and guarding the same, besides preventing contact of the hand therewith. The hook and eye may be secured to the band by stitching, as in Figs. 3 and '4, or by clips punched out of the body of the same, as in Figs. 5, 6, 7, and 8. .In order to strengthen the tie, the ends of the band are turned over and doubled and the stitching or fastenings of the hook and eye passed through the two thicknesses, thus providing a strong connection. for the hook and eye, the folds at the ends of the bands also increasing the wearing qualities of the band atsaid ends. As the hook and eye are concealed and guarded,they are not liable to be disconnected from each other orwrenched from the band, as is evident, and-they are furthermore prevented from rubbing on the covering of the umbrella and disfiguring and cutting the same.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,

1. An umbrella or parasol tie consisting of, a band having a connected hook and eye on opposite faces, within the ends thereof, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
