SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 295,996, dated April 1, 1884.

Be itknown that I, ELLEN S. GETCHELL, `of

Boston, in the county f Suffolk and State-of ofthe binding, and that when applied to its purpose it will remain securely in place withoutslipping off. Provision is made-also for recording the number of any page in the book.

In the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure l represents my improved book-cover with one of the flaps laid back the better to illustrate the invention.

` A represents the body or main portion of Fig. 2 is a section the` cover provided withthe usual tongues a for lying in the spring-back of the book, and iiaps b for foldingover the front edges of the binding.

l B B are flaps provided with the hook-shaped portions or extensions B.` The hooks B are narrow at their necks B, and hook shaped and bulbous at their ends B', as shown. To secure the cover on the book, they are inserted through the slits c in the flaps b, where they remain securely ori-account of their shape.

` In book-covers the strain comes heavily on the flaps B, such strain being from the point where the inner edges of such flaps join the main portion of the cover Af. e., the point in the drawings between the flaps B and the tongues a to the slits c. The tendency is, of course, to pull out the flaps B, especially if the book binding be a thick one. 'Io obviate this difficulty, I make all the hooks to'project inwardly, as shown-i. e., toward the center of the coverin order that they may resist `the strain and not slip out.

In order that the reader may ascertain the number of the page reached at the last reading `of the book, stripsl) are provided, each bearing numbers from l to 9, inclusive. gether. I do not claim that hooks of this description are in themselves considered novel; but I am not aware that they have been used in connection with book-covers, especially when arranged to project inwardly, as shown,

thereby serving a purpose important to a book-cover. Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The hercindescribed improved bookcover, consisting, essentially, of the main portion A, side ilaps, b, provided with the slits c, and hooked aps B B B", the hocks B on said flaps being all cut and arranged,as shown, to project inwardly toward the center of the book-cover, all constructed substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. `The combination, in a book-cover, of the main portion A, provided with the side flap, b, said side iiap having the slits d and slot e, and the numbered strips D, constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose described.
