JAMES BAILLIE HAMILTON, OF HAMMERSMITH, COUNTY OF MIDDLESEX, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO EDWARD ARCHIBALD RAMSDEN, OF IN- HOLMS, ENGLAND.
REED-ORGAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 295,868, dated March 25, 1884. Application filed February 4, 1884. (No model.)
T all w/tom/ it may concern; t Be it known that I, J AMES BAILLIE HAM- ILTON, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, and residing at Studland Street, Hammersmith, county of Middlesex, England, have invented certain Improvements in Reed-Organs, of which the following is a specification. Y
My invention consists of certain improvements in the construction of reed-organs, my
improvements being more especially applicable to the form of organ illustrated in the application for a United States patent iiled by me October 2, 1883, Serial N o. 107,956, and al- I 5 lowed January 14, 18784.
The main object of my invention is to simplify and economize the construction of the organ and increase its rigidity and strength,
\ and this object I attain as hereinafter described. 2O In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a vertical transverse section of sufficient of the sound-producing portion of an organ to illustrate my invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line l 2, and Fig. 3 is a plan view. 2 5 A is the sound-board, and B B the pallets, controlled by the keys in any usual way. D are the reed-plates; E, the slides for opening and closing the passages, F, the' nostrilsj and G the mouths In my application above referred to I have illustrated the reeds as mounted in series on removable breech-pieces, with the view of bringing the reeds close to the pallets. In my present invention I obtain a still closer proximity of the reeds to the pallets, and reduce the depth of the soundbars by making the reed-plates themselves the removable breech-pieces-that is to say, I mount all the reed-tongues or sets of tongues old common to 40 one pallet in longitudinal series on one continuous reed-plate, D. This reed-plate D is adapted to guides in the bars a of the soundboard, and like the breech-piece or plug in my former invention, can be readily removed and replaced. This construction enables me to make the sound-bars a of reduced depth, leaving simply space enough for the free play of the tongues d. I do not, however, wish to claim the mounting of several reed-tongues on the same plate, as this is shown in my patent of September 5, 1882, No. 263,899. The front end of each opening between the sound-bars may be closed by forming a ange on or applying a plug, d', Fig. 2, to the end of the reed-plate D; or a hinged flap, d2, as indicated by dotted lines in said iigure, may be used to close the whole or a series of these openings across the width of the organ.
In order to get an increased rigidity of the parts in connection with the construction described, I change the position of what I have termed the nostrils in relation to the mouths/7 andA I form these nostrils F in a block, which is rigidly connected to the bars a of the sound-board, and is underneath the block in which are formed the mouths G, the slides E, for opening and closing the passages, being arranged between the said nostril-block and month-block. In this way I obtain a very rigid structure, and at the same time economize space laterally by arranging the holes in closer proximity-that is, alternately, in the manner shown in Fig. 3. The block which contains the mouths, therefore, remains in a separate upper tier, with the slides interven- 75 ing between that and the block containing what Iterin nostrils The mouths can thus be in closer proximity to each other, owing to the nostrils being relegated to the lower tier or block. To give these mouths the varying degrees of closure desirable or necessary to obtain the proper quality and quantity of tone, covering or inclosing strips or boards H may be secured over the top ofthe mouth-block.
I prefer to make the closure by securing 85 the strips in place, as shown in the drawings, so that one strip H covers alternate mouths, extending from one end of the organ to the other.
It will be understood that my improvements may be applied to organs to be operated by either suction or pressure. v
I claim as my inventionl. The combination of the pallets, soundboard, and reeds with cavity-boards, one above the other, the lower one containing the nostrils :md the upper one the mouths, and an in- In testimony whereof Ihave signed my name tel-mediate eontrollngslide, substantially as to this specification in the presence of two sub- 1o set forth. serbng witnesses.
