To all whom it may concern:
cago, in the county of Cook and State of Illif 5Inois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Reed-Organs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certaim improvements in organs of the reed type, and has for its object the provision of means whereby the tone-producing parts or members are rendered capable of convenient removal from the main structure of theiorgan in order to effect repair of any one section or to tune the same, orIfor any other purpose.
As is well known,reed-organs are constructed of horizontal sets of reeds arranged in tiers one above the other and operated by pallets in vertical rows, each vertical row of pallets being lifted simultaneously by the key and its connections. Heretofore the windchest, resonator, and set of reeds have been permanently secured to the main structure of the organ, thereby necessitating the return of the entire instrument to the factory in order to efiect repairs of any one given section or to tune the reeds of any section.
My invention has certain other objects in view; and it consists in the features described, and pointed out in my claims, reference being now had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a cross-section through the keyboard and a vertical section through the reedcells, wind-chests, and resonators, also showing the connections between the keys and the pallets. Fig. 2 is a perspective view in section and partly broken away, showing one independent section in its relation to the wind-trunk. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing one section removed from the main structure of the organ. Fig. 4. is a like View showing one of the sections replaced and adjusted in position.
My invention is adapted for use in conjunction with that character of reed-organ in which wind-trunks are employed (designated at A) connected with a suitable bellows B, Fig. 2, which creates a pressure or suction blast in the wind-trunk.
The sets of reeds D are arranged horizontally one above the other in the usual manner and, together with the wind-chests E, reed-cells H, and resonators J, constitute independent sections comprised of these elements or members arranged horizontally one above the other.
The pallets K are operated from the keys L by means of connections between said keys and the pallet-lifting rod M.
As shown in Fig. 4, I provide grooves 15 on the inner sides or faces of the wind-trunks, and on the removable and replaceable independent sections (designated as a Whole at N) are tongues 16. By means of these tongues and grooves each independent section N may and will be removed from or replaced upon the main structure-of the organ.
As another feature of my invention, it will be observed, by reference to Figs. 3 and 4, that the resonator J extends beyond the reed cells H and wind-chest E and is provided with a port 0, so that when the independent section is adjusted on the wind-trunks A the resonator J has communication with the windtrunk on the rear thereof.
It will therefore be evident from the foregoing that by virtue of this removable characteristic each independent section may be taken out of the organ without disturbing any other one of the sections for the purposes as heretofore outlined. A distinct advantage results from this construction and arrangement, as each set of reeds may be removed from and replaced upon the organ independently.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
