Description

N5 Model.)
I 0. W. EMERSON.
- HANGING: DOORS.
No. 295,743. a Patented'Mar; 25, 1884.
T screws or otherwise.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES w. EMERSON, on OHARLESTOWN, MASSACHUSETTS.
HANGING DOORS.
j l SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 295,743, dated March 25, 1884.
Application filed February 7, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES W. EMERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at' Oharlestown, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hanging Doors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in means for hanging sliding doors that are suspended from hearings or supports above the doors; and the invention consists in the employment of aseries of grooved rollers, in connection with an equal number of separate bars, which serve to keep the said rollers in proper relative position. The rollers run upon a track, and support above a bar to which hangers are attached that support the sliding door.
Referring tothe accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a sliding door with my improved attachments. Fig. 2 is avertical section of the same.- Fig. 3showsa grooved roller enlarged. Fig. 4 is an enlarged view of one of the bars that rest upon the rollers. Figs. 5 to 8 are modifications, andFig. 9 represents the means for hanging the door.
a is the sliding door, b the jamb or frame, and c the space in which the supporting-bar slides. I
e is a bar, of a length somewhat greater than the width of the door. To the bar 6 are attached the hangers f f, which support the door a. I propose to hang the do'orsloy the means shown in Fig. 9. To the bar eis attached the hanger f, the lower end of which is bent at right angles, the horizontal portion being of a length equal to the Width or thickness of the door. In the top of the door is a recess corre-' sponding to the size of the horizontal portion of the hanger f. Over the said recess is secured to the door a flat bar, t, by means of By this means the door can be readily attached to the hangers by simply inserting the lower horizontal portion of the same into the recess on the top of the door and under the bar t. I
represents a roller formed with a deep groove, as shown in Fig. 3.
g 9 represent bars of metal or other suitable material, one of which is shown enlarged in Fig. 4, and each having a recess or opening on its under side, as shown, which. allows it to fit within the groove of the roller h and bear upon the central connection of the two sides of the roller, thus allowing the upper portion of the roller to project above the top of the bar 9.
In Fig. l are shown four of these rollers and the rollers run upon a track, d, having arib or guide that enters the groove of the rollers. I
It. k are stops-at each end of the track d to limit the movement of the bars 9.
Fig. 5 shows a modification of the bar 9,
having a groove on its under side, which fits upon the tongue or guide of the track.
Figs. 6, 7, and 8 are modifications of the means for hanging the door. These are to provide for the use of a double set of rollersone on each side of the hangers fwhich connect the bar i to an angle-bar, m, to be attached to the top of the door. These modifications are designed for adaptation to different styles of doors. By means of my improved mode of hanging doors I am enabled to attach the doors to the hangers after the room has been finished, or remove them at any time without disturbing the casing of the door. l
What I claim as my invention is- 1. The combination, with a door, a, of the hangers f f, the sliding bar e, the grooved rollers h, the separate or sectional bars g g, recessed on their under sides, and the track d, provided with a central guide, all as and for the purpose specified.
2. The door (1, having a recess in the top or upper edge, in combination with the bar i and rectangular hanger f, andthe bar 0, as and for CHARLES \V. EMERSON.
