SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 295,624, dated March 215, 1884;

Application filed January 12, 1884. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WALTER S. FREEMAN, of Bloomfield, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shoes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to shoes having in each side of the front of the quarter lace-holes which receive a tie, and the style of which may be readily changed from atie to abutton shoe or from a tie to a buckle shoe.

The invention consists, essentially, in a shoe provided in each side of the front of the quarter with lace-holes, and having attached to one side thereof a strap adapted to be eitherturned in under the side of the quarter to which it is attached, or to lap over the other side of the quarter and be secured to said other side of the quarter by one or more buttons or other fastening devices.

The invention further consists in providing on the interior of that side of the front'of the quarter to which the strap above described is attached, a pocket which receives said strap when it is turned in and holds it in its turned in position, as more fullyhereinafter described.

In the accompanying drawings. Figure 1 is a perspective view of a shoe embodying my invention, the strap being turned in and the shoe being tied. Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the sides of the front of the quarter, showing the pocket and thestrap turned in within the pocket; and Fig. 3is aperspective view similar to Fig. 1, but showing the strap in its outside position, and secured by a fastening consisting of a button.

From the outer extremity of the side A there extends astrap, A ,which is adapted to be turned in, as shown dotted in Fig. 1 and in the sectional view, Fig. 2, so that it will lie on the. interior of the side A. In this example of my invention there is provided on the interior of the sideA, apocket, 25, into which the strap A maybe slipped when it is turned in, as is shown in Fig. 2; but this pocket is not necessarily employed. In addition to the lace-holes a a in the side A, the strap A also has lace-holes a and where said strap is turned in the lace-holes a come opposite the lace-holes a in the side A, as is shown in Fig. 2; and hence a lace or tie, B, can readily be inserted through said holes a a Thus I provide for lacing or tying the shoe in the ordinary way by means of the lace or tie B passed through the holes a a on the one side and the holes a on the other side of the front of the quarter.

WVhen it is desired to change the style of the shoe, the lace or tie B may be taken out and the strap A extended so as tolap on the side A, as shown in Fig. 3, and the strap is secured to said side A by a suitable fastening or fastenings.

I have here shown a single button, 0, as attached to the side A, and the strap A? may be secured by buttoning onto-this button. Two

buttons might be employed, and in such case the strap A would have two button-holes, in stead of asingle button-hole, c, as here shown. The button or buttons may be permanently or detachably secured to side A, andabuckle permanently or detachablysecured to the side A might be substituted for the button or buttons.

By my invention I provide a low shoe which presents the ordinary appearance of a tie-shoe, and which may, when desired, be changed in style to a button or buckle shoe. The sides of the front of the quarter AA always remain on the outsideof the shoe whether the shoeis tied or buttoned, and are always attached one to the other, either by tying them together or by attaching one to the other by a suitable fastening or fastenings.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A sh'oe provided in each side of the front of the quarter with lace-holes and having attached to one side thereof a strap adapted to be turned in under the side of the quarter to which it is attached or to lap over the other side of the quarter and be secured to said other side of the quarter by a fastening device, substantially as herein described.

2. The combination, with the sides A A, provided with lace-holes a a, of the pocket b and the strap A attached to the side A and adapted to be turned in within said pocket,

substantially as herein described.
