Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL T. HAVILAND, OF JAMISON, ALABAMA.
LOG-TURNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 295,549, dated March 25, 1884.
' Application filed July 13, 1883. (No model.) I
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL T. HAVILAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at J amison, in the county of Chilton andState of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Log-Turning Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in turning logs in saw-mills, and has for its .object tofacilitate this operation by means of simple and inexpensive machinery. This object is attained by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a transverse section. of some of the parts removed. Fig. 4 isaplan. The letter E represents a platform, or it may form a portion of the floor of the mill, upon which it is placed and firmly secured thereto. The frames or timbers F F are kept a small distance apart by the intervening pieces, F, and
the whole of which are fastened together by the bolts H. The framesF and F are placed a convenient distance apart, and form bearings for a shaft, G, to which are securely attached arms B B, and also a handle or lever, D. The arms B B, when in a horizontal position, lie, respectively, between the timbers F F and F F, and are concealed from view. They are provided at their extremities with notches b b, which fit over the V-shaped portion a of the arms A. The arms A are of an elbow shape at one end, and are suspended between the timbers F F by the pivots a, upon which they turn. When in a horizontal position, their upper edges are on a line with the upper part of the beams F F, and when in this positionand it is desired to turn a log, the handle D is raised to a vertical line. This causes the arms Fig. 3 is a detailed view B B to engage their notches b b with the V- shaped portion a of the arms A and cause them to rise and bear against the underside of the. log and turn it upwardly to such an angle that shape portion of the arms A, over which they fit, form guides and prevent any lateral slipping of the arms B B in the act of raising the arms A, and by making the arms of elbow shape the pivots a are placed a good deal below the upper edges of the beams F, and thereby enable the handleD to be raised with very much less power than would be required if the pivots were placed near thetops of the beams F Fl In addition to gaining more power in having the upper beams in an angular shape, it
enables it to throw the log back far enough, so that in turning it over the corner will not hang on theend of head-block.
Having describedmy invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent and to claim and the shaft G, mounted in the said frames SAMUEL T. HAVILAND.
