JOSEPH P. B. RAREY, OF KOKOMO, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO DANIEL RAREY, OF SAME PLACE.
GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 295,428, dated March 18, 1884.
Application filed August 11, 1883. (No model.)
T aZZ w/wm it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH P. B. RAREY, a citizen of theUnited States, and a resident of Kokomo, in the county of Howard and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and X-.
V sponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to that class of gates which are operated by the wheel of a vehicle striking a swinging bail journaled in the roadway; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of a sliding gate operated in this manner, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letters A A indicate two posts at one side of the gateway, between which the gate slides.
B B are two posts, to which the inner ends of the planks inclosing the gate, when drawn in, and the bar upon which the inner end of the gate slides, are fastened; and O is the abuttingpost upon the other side of the gateway.
Disarectangularfraine placed in the roadbed at a level with or slightly below the same, upon which are fastened the bearings E, in which turn the straight portions of the bails F, which are operated by the wheels, and of the bails G, which are operated by the wheel-operated bails, and which operate the gate.
The wheel-operated bails consist of a smaller bail, H, against which the wheel of the vehicle strikes, and a larger bail, I, which straddles the gate-operating bail, and is placed at right angles to the same. The end of the rock-shaft or rocking straight portion of the bail forms a crank, J, upon which is hinged a swinging weight, K, which serves to keep the bails in an upright position and there is one bail at each side of the gate, one serving to open the same, and, the other to close it again.
The gate-operating bail consists of a straight rock-shaft, L,which forms a double crank, M. at its middle near the gate, and two bails, N and 0, upon each side of the gate, which are curved slightly in opposite directions, the bails of each pair standing in planes nearly at right angles to each other, and at angles of nearly forty-five degrees to the plane of the central crank. The two bails of each pair are at such a distance apart that when the wheel-operated bails are tilted the inner bail will bear down upon one of them, tilting the same down.
The gate consists of the outer portion, P, which bars the gateway, and which may be of any desired construction, rails, paling, or wire being used in its construction. The outervertical post, which bears against the abutment-post,
is provided with an upwardly-pointing catch,
rail of the outer portion of the gate, and projects in between the posts A A andB B, forming with an upright post, T, and a brace, U, the inner portion of the gate. A rail,V, is fastened between theupper ends of the two pairs of posts, between which the gate slides, and a roller, W, is journaled in a bail, X, upon the top of the central upright post, T, and travels upon the upper surface of the said rail, while a similar roller,Y, is journaled between the lower ends of an upright bail, Z, which straddles the rail, and is fastened to the inner end of the gate, the roller traveling against the under side of the rail. A connecting-arm, a, is hinged at one end to the upper rail of the inner portion of the gate, near-to, but a short distance to the rear of, the central post, and is hinged at its other end to the long end of alever, b,whichis pivoted upon a horizontal rail, 0, fastened atits end to the lower portions of two of the two pairs of posts between which the gate slides, and to the lower shorter end of V which is hinged a connecting-rod, (Z, the other end of which is hinged to the central double crank upon the gatebperating bails.
It will now be seen that when avehic le passes toward the gate, one of the wheels will strike IOO the wheel-operated bail, tilting it, which will cause the bail upon its inner end to be tilted inward, pressing down the inner bail upon the gateoperating bail-shaft,which again will tilt the said shaft and bail, and the double crank with it, forward toward the gateway, drawing the lower end of the lever in that direction, which causes a draw, in an, upward and rear ward directiomupon the connecting-rod hinged to its upper end, which draw is communicated to the gate through the said rod, raising its inner end, and thereby releasing the catch and drawing it in. When, now, the vehicle has passed through the gate, its wheels will strike the bail upon the other side of the gate, tilting it, which will cause the gate-operating rockshaft to return to its old position, closing thegate.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. The combination of two rock-shafts parallel with the gate, each having a bail adapted to be tilted by a vehicle-wheel, a bail near its inner end in the same plane as the former, and a weight upon its end keeping it npright, with a rock-shait parallel with the roadway, having two curved bails at each end at right angles to each other, and connecting means for operating a gate, one wheel-operated shaft being at each end of the gate-operatingshaft, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
2. The combination of an abutment post having a slotted catch-plate, a gate sliding between two sets of posts, having an upwardlyhooked catch at its abutting end, and a roller at its center rolling upon the upper side, and a roller at its end traveling upon the lower side ofa horizontal rail, a connecting-rod hinged to the gate to the rear of its center, a lever having the said connecting-rod hinged to its upper longer end, a connecting-rod hinged to the lower short end of the lever, a rock-shaft having a pair of divergently-curved bails at each end, the bails in each pair being at right angles to each other, and a double crank, to which the connecting-rod is hinged, and a pair of rock-shafts having bails adapted to be operated by a vehicle-wheel, bails straddling the rock-shaft between each pair of curved bails, and weights at their ends keeping the bails upright, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH P. B. RAREY.
