Letters Patent No. 107,801,
dated September 27, i870.
IMPROVEMENT `IN AUTQMATIC GATES..
".-ih'e Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same -To all whom timmy conce/rn:
Be it known tliatI,` MICHAEL OREWILER, of Bncyrus, in the county of Grawiord and State, of Ohio, useful VGrate for Railroads, `purposes and 'I do hereby declare is` afull, clear, and exact .description thereof, sufficient toenable 'those skilled in the art to which. iny invention appertains to make .and use the same, reference-being had to the accompanying drawing making part of this s'pecieation, in which Farms, and other as applied to a railroad-track. i,
Figure 2 is an end view, showing the position of `Figure 3is a transverse. section, taken in tli'e line-`l The nature of my invention consists iii se. conof' a railroad-tran, wagon, or otherl vehicle, will cause the gate to slideopen horizontally, and remain open` gate will be closedby means of springsj The gate `may be long `enough ,to extend entirely across the gateeway, if desired;` but-I prefer to divide two halves otthegatewvill slide in opposite directions.: c i i' The top rail A is about twice as long as the others, portion passes through a` `mortise in a post, C, placed at asiiit-able distance from the gate- Vgate being supported` by the gate-posts B, which sired.l 4
To the outer, end of the' top rail A is pivoted one neeted with a lever, E, which is curved downward to a point just below the bottom of the track, and then turned at a right angle,"ian`d rigidly attached to av shaft, Eplaeedparallel with the rails It, and having its bearings in the ties fl, upon which the rails rest.`
Projecting outward from the shaft F, at suitable distances apart, are short levers, I, which aie connected by pivots to the lower ends of rods J, the upper ends ot' which are attached to a rail, K, running parallel withthe rails R for a suitable distance on each side of the gate-way.`
Under the rail K, at suitable distances, and in any desired number, are springs, S, which i'est upon the ties CP, and serve to keep. the parts in the position shown in fig. 2, They inaybe spiral metallic springs,
or made of rubber or other material, and of any suitable forni.
When the gate is divided in the middle', it ishot' course, necessary to provide each half of' the gate with the pitman D, lever E, shaft F, and rail K, and theii appendages.
This gate may be applied to farms, tnrnpikes, and other common roads by substituting a close' platform for the rails K.
When a. railroadtrain approaches the gate, 4the 'anges of the wheels press d own the rails K, as shown i'n.` dotted lines 'n'i'g. 3, thus, `by Atheiroonnection throughthe rods J and levers I, giving a partial revo'i'ut-ion to the shaft F, andthrowing the leverE outward, which causes the gate to slide open horizontally,
and remain open until` nthe .rail'K'is relieved of the weight of the train, when the springs S press the rail K upward, reversing the former motion, and closing the gate. l
y,The operation is the same whena'wagon or siinilai' vehicle passesy ovei platform substituted for the rail K.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is A Y The combination ot' the pitiuan D, bent lever E, shaft F, levers I, rods J, rail K, and springs S, when arranged andv operating as shown and described,
MICHAEL OREWILER.'
