. IMPROVEMENT m swmcs.
- Specificationforming part of Letters Patent N 0. 174,322, dated February 29, 1876; application filed January 28, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN G. TAYLOR, of Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore and in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swings; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference 'bein g had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters {Iof reference marked thereon,
making a part of this specification.
. scribe itscon'struction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which repre-,
sents a side elevation of my invention.
A A represents two parallel standards of any suitable height, held firmly in vertical position by means of inclined braces B B. In the upper end of each standard is made a Y-shaped notch, a, in which rests a V-shaped 'bar, 0, secured crosswise under the center of arect-angular platform, D. In the center ofthis platform on each side is a frame, E, with gate G, through which access is had to the platform. On the platform D are further erected a series of upright parallel frames, H, extending across the platform at suitable distances apart, and connected by railing I. They may also be braced together and to the platform, if required. From each frame H are suspended one or more swinging seats, J, thus forming a combined seesaw and swing.
The platform D is rocked in its bearing-bar G by the following means: From the center of said bar 0 extends a beam, K, vertically downward, and this beam is held firm by means of inclined braces M, as shown. Other braces N are also attached under the center of the platform, with rods 0 0 extending from the lower ends of saids braces to the ends of the platform. To the lower end of the beam K is attached a lever, L, extending on both sides thereof, and which is to be operated by one or more men on each side, standing on the ground below the'platform. Springs PP are arranged under each end of the platform D for the same to strike on when coming down to the ground, to avoid any sudden shock. Under each end of the platform are one or more longitudinal rods, d, each of which is provided with an adjustable weight, b, for balancing the seesaw according to the number and weight of the persons thereon. 7
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of a rocking platform, a series of transverse frames erected thereon, and one or more swinging seats suspended from each frame above the platform, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination of the notched standards A, platform D, with bar 0, gates G, frames H, and swinging seats J, as and for the purposes herein set forth.
3. The combination, with the rocking platform D, ot'the pendent beam K, lever L, braces M N, and rods 0, for the purposes herein set forth.
4C. The rods 01, with adjustable weights 1), in combination with the rocking platform D, for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony thatI claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 24th day of January, 1876. r
