BED-BOTTOM.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 29,540, dated August 7, 1860.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LEVI W. BUXTON, of Nashua, in the county of Hillsboro and State of New Hampshire, have invented an Improved Bed-Bottom, of which the followin is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which is represented the rails or frame of a bedstead with my improved bed-bottom attached.

My present invention consists of a bed bottom composed of four rods to each of which a series of small pulleys is attached for the bed cord to reeve through, each rod being connected to its respective bedstead rail by a series of elastic loops.

I am aware that pulleys have been attached to the rails of a bedstead, for the bedcord to run through, but in this case each pulley was attached to the rail by its own loop independent of those adjoining it, so that a weight pressing down upon the bedcord opposite to any particular pulley caused that pulley to sink far below the level of the contiguous ones, rendering the bed uneven and uncomfortable; whereas in my improved bed bottom the pulleys at either end or side of the bed being connected together by a rigid rod and mutually supporting each other the strain of a weight pressing down on the cords is more equally diffused over the whole surface of the bed bottom and it is not so liable to sink into hollows.

That others skilled in the art may understand and use my invention I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried out the same.

In the said drawings A, A, are the end rails and B B the side rails of a bedstead. To the inner face of each rail is attached by screws a, a strip 6, to which is fastened a series of elastic loops C, which embrace a stout metal rod 0. The strip 6, is formed in two pieces 1 and 2 held together by screws 3. The loops C, are passed over the rod 0, and the two ends of the elastic band are secured by nails and glue to the portion 1 of the strip 6, which is notched out to receive them. The part 2 of this strip is then fastened down onto the part 1, as shown in the drawings. A small bent rod 4: passes through a small wooden roll or pulley f and is attached to the rod 0, on-each side of a loop C(these small rods 4 may be soldered to the rod 0, or may be bent around it.) The cord 9, is attached to one of the pulleys f at one end of the bed as at 5 and is led over the opposite pulley at the other end, and alternately over opposite pulleys, when it is drawn up tight and is secured to the pulley 6. Another cord IL, is led in the same manner over the pulleys connected with the two side rails, this cord crossing and interlacing with the cord 9, the whole when thus arranged forming an elastic and comfortable bed bottom. The strips b, are here shown as secured to the rails by screws a but several stout flat hooks may project from each rail and the strip 1), be set down into it, in the latter case it will only be necessary to lift the strips out of the hooks to remove the whole bed bottom together.

hat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The rods 0 with their pulleys f in combination with the elastic loops or bands C and cords g, h, operating substantially as described.
