SHOE OR GLOVE FASTENING. No. 295,241; Patented Mar.f 18, 1884.

Ni'rnn STATES MATTHEW S. FOX, OF FORT SCOTT, KANSAS.
SHOEOR GLOVE FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 295,241, dated March 18, 1884.
' Application filed November .16, 1883. (No mode1.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MATTHEW S. Fox, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Scott, in the county of Bourbon and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe and Button Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has relation to improvements in shoe and glove fasteners; and it con sists in the construction and novel arrangement of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully explained, and particularly pointed out in the claim appended.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrates my invention, in which.-
Figure 1 represents a front view of a shoe showing my device attached. Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan view of the fastener. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 4 is an edge view, and Figs. 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 are detail views.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the fastening-plate, which is provided at its forward end with an oblong opening or slot, a, that communicates with a notch, 12, in the end of the plate, and at the rear portion of said plate or fastening A the same is provided with a deep flange, c, that forms a part of the plate, which flange is designed to pass through the leather on one side of the slit or opening of the shoe or glove I. with the plate on the outside thereof, and by means of clinching-instrument securely fasten On the opposite side from that just mentioned are secured the buttons, to which the fasteningplates are attached. Said buttons are designated by the letter (I, which consist of a cir' cular plate, 6, having projecting prongs j, which are passed through the material and clinched on the under side, thus securing said button thereto. The head of the button is conneat-ed to the circular plate 6 by the shank g, and said headis provided with a rearwardlyproj eeting flange, h,which is centrally notched,
as at i, to permit the insertion of the instrument, by means of which the plate Aand butten are detached from one another, which will be further hereinafter explained.
ward end of said plate is caught beneath the projecting flange h, and when said plate and button are engaged the notch i and notch I; register with one another, thus permitting the pointed end at of the button-fastener to. be insorted, and by pressure upon the same rearwardly disengages the plate from said button.
Figure 9 of the drawings shows another style of button fastener or hook adapted to be used in connection with this style of fastening having a pointed end for detaching the slotted plate from the button, while the bent portion it serves to force the plate A over the head of the button. It will be further seen by the above description and by reference to the an nexed drawings that the flange that is clinched to the material and the plate are constructed in one piece, as also the button and its clinching-prongs, and a shoe or glove fastening con structed as herein shown and described is quickly and easily applied to the material, ornamental, durable, easily and quickly buttoned and 'unbuttoned, and at the same time cheap to manufacture.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
In a shoe or glove fastening, the combination of the plate A, having the slot a, notch b, and securing-flange 0, button (I, having the head notched, as at z, and projecting prongs f, the whole adapted to operate as shown, described, and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
