To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, WOLF RossnEnu and Louis Rossnnnr, both citizens of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York. have invented new and useful Improvements in Heels for Ladies Slippers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates, especially, to that class of heels which are made of wood and with a curved breast, forming what is known as the In applying a heel of this class to a ladys slipper, the sole of the slipper has been split at a point opposite the heel, to form two layers, one of which is bent down and united to the breast of the heel, to give it the appearance of leather, the other layer extending to the rear of the slipper in the plane of the sole. This work,however, demands con siderable skill, thus rendering the slipper compara-tively expensive; and the object of our invention is to produce a heel which, when applied to a slipper, shall present the appearance of the article above described, without splitting the sole, to which end it consistsin facing the breast of the heel with a layer of sole-leather in the process of its manufacture, and applying the heel to the slipper in such a manner that this facing is flush with the'sole.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view, part-lyin section, of the slipper as heretofore made. Fig. 2 is a similar View of a slipper containing our invention. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the heel detached from the slipper, and Fig. 4 a vertical central sectional view of the heel.

Referring to Fig. 2, the letter A designates the upper, B the sole, and O the heel. This heel C- is made of wood in one piece, and the R SHOES.

I breast D thereof is curved forwardly toward the sole, as heretofore, while it is faced with a layer, 6, of sole-leather, this layer being entirely separate from the sole, but similar in color thereto. At a point opposite to the heel the sole B is skived on the lower surface to a depth approximately equal to the thickness of the facing-layer e of the heel, and such layer being made to join the shoulderf, formed at it is rendered flush with the sole, as shown, thus presenting an appearance similar to the structure shown in Fig. 1.

The facing-layer e is put on in the manufacture of the heel, and since the operation of applying the heel to the slipper demands no particular skill, the manufactu re thereof is comparatively inexpensive \Vhat we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. Asa new or improved article of manu facture, a solid heel having the breast curved forwardly and faced with a layer ofsole leather, substantially as and for the purpose described.

2. The combination, with a slipper, of a solid heel having the breast curved forwardly and faced with a layer of sole-leather flush with the sole of the slipper, the lower heel portion of the sole being cut away to let in the heel, substantially as described.
