EARLE C. BACON, OF BROOKLYN, ASSIGNOR TO COPELAND & BACON, OF
NEW YORK, N. Y.
FRiCTiON-DRUM FOR lNCLlNED-PLANE CABLE-RAILWAYS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 294,953, dated March 11, 1884.
Application filed December a, 1883. (x0 model.)
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, EARLE G. BACON, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Friction-Drum for Inclined-Plane Gable-Railways, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to'facilitate the starting of inclined-plane cable-railway cars.
The invention consists of the several combinations and arrangements of parts, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth ,and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figurel is a plan view of my improved friction-drums for inclined-plane cable-railways. Fig. 2 is a cross sectional elevation of the same on the line as m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan View of the same. Fig. 4 is a side view of the frame in which the vertical shaft is j ournaled.
Two grooved drums, A and B, are mounted on short vertical shafts C, journaled in the top and bottom frames, D D, which are securely fastened to a suitable base at the top of an incline. A cable, E, or chain runs over the two drums in the manner shown, and each end of the cable is connected with a car running on the inclined plane on separate tracks, said chain or cable being passed to and rove a number of times .around the drums in the direction indicated by the arrow a, both drums being inclined in each of the coils produced by reeving the cable, as aforesaid. On the shaft 0 of the drum A a cog-wheel, F, is rigidly mounted, and is adapted to engage with a pinion, G, mounted rigidly at the lower end of a sleeve, H, adapted to slide vertically on a shaft, J, which is journaled in a transverse frame, K, on the top frame, D. A feather, L, on the shaft J causes the sleeve H to turn with the shaft J, and permits of the vertical adjustment of the sleeve. The prongs of a forked end, M, of a foot-lever, M, pass into an annular groove, N, in the sleeve H. By means of a latch, O, or other suitable device, the free end of .the lever M can be locked inthe lowered position. A socket-ring, I, for receiving the ends of poles for turning the shaft, or a beltpulley for the application of power, is mounted rigidly on the upper end of the shaft J. A horizontal ratchet-wheel, Q, is mounted on or made integral with the sleeve H, and a pawl, B, pivoted to the frame K, rests on the teeth of the ratchet-wheel. Brake-bands S, surrounding the lower smooth parts, a b, of the drums AB, have their ends attached to alever, T, pivoted to swing in the horizontal plane between the drums. The other ends of the brakebands are attached to rods (1, passing through lugs f of the frame D, and provided with nuts 9 on the threaded ends, for the purpose of adjusting the tension of the brake-bands.
The operation is as follows: If the cable is to be started, which is necessary if the loaded car must travel a short distance over a level or slightly-inclined part of the track, the lever M is released, so as to permit the sleeve H to descend and the pinion G to engage with. the cog-wheel F. Then the shaft J is turned by hand or power, and causes the pinion G to turn, which turns the cog-wheel F and the drums A B. As soon as the loaded car has been moved to such an extent that it will move under the action of gravity, the sleeve H and the pinion G are raised by depressing the free end of the lever M, and in this position the lever is locked by means of the latch O or other device. The pinion is then disengaged from the cog-wheel, and the shaft J will not be turned. By moving the free end of the brakelever T laterallyin either direction, both brakebands will be applied. As the cable runs over two drums, greater strength and safety are obtained than in the usual friction-drums of cable-railways, in which one drum only is used. As I use two brake-bands, I obtain a very large friction-surface for the brakes, and the speed of the cars can be controlled very easily. When the pinion is engaged with the cog-wheel, the pawl R at all times locks the pulleys in position as soon as the lever for turning the shaft J is released or the power is cut off.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a cable-railway, the combination, with I herein shown and described, and for the purthe cable, of two friction-drums, around which the cable passes, and of a brake-band for each drum, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a cable-railway, the combination, with the cable, of two friction-dru ms, around which the cable passes, a brake band for each drum, and of devices for applying both brake-bands simultaneously, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
3. In acable-railway, the combination, with the cable, of two friction-drums, around which the cable passes, a brakeband for each drum, and a lever connected with both bands, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
4:. The combination, with a friction-drum, of a brake-band, S, the lever T, the rod (1, and the tensioiradjusting nut substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
5. The combination, with a friction-drum for a cable, of a cog-wheel united with the said drum, and of a pinion mounted on a shaft that can be rotated, which pinion is adapted to be engaged with the eog-wheel, substantially as pose set forth.
6. The combination, with a friction-drum for a cable, of a cog-wheel united with the said drum, of a pinion mounted on a shaft that can be rotated, and devices for engaging the pinion with the said cog-whee], substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
7. The combination, with the cable-drum A, of the cog-wheel F, united with the same, the shaft J, provided with devices for turning it, the sleeve H, the pinion G, mounted thereon, and devices for vertically adjusting the said sleeve, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
8. The eo1nbinati0n,with the cable-drum A, of the cog-wheel F, united with the same, the shaft J, provided with devices for turning it, the sleeve II, the pinion G, the lever M, the ratchet-wheel Q, and the pawl R, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
